OK, alternators catching on fire means something is drawing a boat load of current........like a dead short.
In an old truck I did have a battery that had an intermittent internal dead short. It caused wiring to melt (positive to battery) and the truck to shut down. Since it only happened once and a while it was impossible to find. Replacing the battery with a spare (because it was dead,not because I suspected it was bad) finally pointed to the cause.
Catch on fire? That is extreme failure mode, one I haven't seen or experienced in 30+ years... You have something pretty special going on.
I would have to suspect an intermittent very heavy load. Like a short.
For the record, rebuilds are notorious for being very, very unreliable. I gave up on them several years ago and ONLY buy new. Cheaper that way...
