I just installed two 6x9 w/ custom built box, in my truck yesterday. (pounds!! for 6x9) But when I turn it up, the lights on the deck dim everytime the bass knocks. Eventually....it led to my headlights flickering! Does anyone know what this could be from? I figured the 6x9 are drawing a lot of power from the deck (old) which may be causing this but I'm not sure. Oh!...and when it was on loud, the sound would cut out and come back on, sometimes just one speaker or both.
sounds like it could be either to me. I would check the grounds first. Then I would have your alt and battery checked at the auto parts store. Keep in mind our old external fan alternators only put out 65 amps... when new... If you want to bouce that bass and add aftermarket stero equipment, it's usually best to do a 95-130amp 3G upgrade to make sure your not over drawing the entire system.
Put it this way, it only encounters a problem at high volume. Which i can logically presume the connections are solid and it is ground properly. Mind you, before I had the 6x9 in, I was just running the little 4" door panel speakers at high volume and no problems. Maybe just a tiiiiiiny little dimming of the lights on the deck. I mean... how much draw can little 4" speakers cause?? which led me to believe it might be the deck itself.

INTERESTING! I love it when I come on here, i learn something new everytime. One would think so really it's messing with my electrical system. I was jus parked with truck running when my headlights started to flicker like a strobe light. I will look into this...
How did you connect your new speakers in the box to the stock radio?
The 6x9 are wired to terminal speaker connection plate mounted on/in the boxes. Like any speaker terminal hook up behind a speaker, then wiring from the deck wired to designated spots.
forgot, it's aftermarket cd player. old school clarion deck...

Reason: brain fart
Check your voltage. I don't even think its possible for a headunit to pull too much power. But maybe its just adding to a problem you already have.
Normally when the sound cuts out its an AMP going into protect mode from low voltage or a short.
Whats really throwing me off is that you have no amp at all. Just headunit power.
But anyways check your voltage with stereo on and off and see what you get.
BTW these trucks have 6.5" door speakers. Not 4"
Holy S*** 6" in the doors!?! whoa, wouldnt think that honestly, that or mine just need to be replaced badly. My bad, thanks for the enlightment on that, wouldve never guessed.
yup no amp!...killer deck eh!? ahahaha. Ive hooked up many sound systems and speakers and have never come across this before, so kinda stumped.
I hate electrical as it can be caused/come from absolutely anything.
you guys still think it's worth ungrading to higher amp alternator?! what other advantages would I have from that aside from stereo?

Lol no. a headunit takes barley anything to run. I run a 200 amp alternator but that was for my 3500+ watts rms I was running with my amps.
If you were running alot of lights, electric fan, winch, or some nice amps then yes. But for what you are running you dont need to do anything to your electrical. Stock will be just fine. I ran 1000rms on stock alternator and battery okay.
Try a different deck and see if that fixes it. But like I said earlier you still should check your voltages.
