im getting ready to start to modify my 7.3 and wanted to start with a base line so i installed a boost gauge (auto meter) to get a base line of stock before i do anything and check for leaks . hooked up last night and im getting topped out at 17 18 lbs i think this is ok for a motor with 258000 mi . is it normal for gauge to start to bounce back and forth at top boost say between 12 and 18 ?? never built a diesal motor but lots of gas ones. thank you ahead for any input wes
i have an 01' f250 and i dont know what it did when it was stock but with my superchip, intake and exhaust im getting 23lbs of max boost and mine doesnt bounce back and forth, it holds as long as my foot does.
you should check all of your boots on the intake and check for leaks on the up pipes to get started if you suspect it has leaks. Other guys should tone in before long that know more. good luck.
I have not heard of one bouncing when it is working correctly. They usually will be steady and rise and fall according to how much fuel you are feeding it.
Surge...Cheapest way....that can be corrected with a wicked wheel(95-97)compressor wheel. You can install a ported housing which gives you a 4'' suction to the intake.
I wouldn't say it is normal to bounce. Mine does it when I get turbo surge. That has only happened when I'm pulling my 5th wheel. It only baounces around about 2-3 psi on the gauge.

thanks to all who answered im thinking i have minor leaks at the boots . that makes sence because they have never been messed with 11 years covered in oil even the last one before intake is got a light coat of oil and dirt on it . the lower ones on cooler are dripping on frame rail . but truck ran so good i have never messed with any thing . time to start taking care of her so she can last another 258000 . thanks wes
