I'm not completely mechanically inept, but close. I ordered the blue spring replacement for the fuel pressure regulator from partsguyed. Is there a writeup on how to do this installation that I can follow?
Just pay attention and take pictures if you have to when you pull it apart then reverse everything you just did to install. It's probably the easiest install you can do on these trucks.
I have a background as a full time mechanic for years in my younger days, Earl Hayes Chevrolet in Oak Cliff part of Dallas but the point I want to make is yes it is a very easy install but anyone can make a mistake and thats what I did I managed to drop a small piece that installs behind the spring and didn't notice it well when started it and didn't have good fuel pressure. I went back checking and luckely found the part reinstalled and all is well, do what High Binder suggests and all will be good.
Instructions would be nice - there must be two different designs, as I had a part left over in the kit that I think was supposed to fit in the housing under the spring, but it was too big.

do you have a part number or a link to the actual part?
These instructions were posted by npccpartsman on how to install the blue spring:
Remove the air cleaner, loosen the CAC tube and roll it out of the way. Loosen and remove the fuel line on the fuel pressure regulator cover. Loosen the 4 t27 torx screws on the same cover carefully maintaining pressure on the cover because the spring WILL push it off. The cover will come off along with the spring and poppet valve. Slide the spring out of the poppet valve, put the BB in where the spring came out and slide the spring back in behind the BB. Reinstall the cover.
It's MUCH easier to do with the upper radiator hose removed
