I have a 99 7.3. Can someone tell me how long after my truck goes to "high idle" does it normally take for the idle to lower? My truck will high idle all day if I let it. Just wanting to know if it is normal. Also , if i depress the brake pedal , the high idle lowers back to normal. Is this normal? Thirsting for knowledge! Bill
My 02 F-250 does and has done the same thing the past 6 years i've owned it. Pretty sure it is normal, especially during cold months. If it is really cold, like it is now, (in the teens w/wind chill in the -0's,) even if i've driven it and got out leaving it running it will idle back to the high idle.
Yes, it is normal.
It will stay at high idle until you touch the brake pedal or the engine oil gets up to temperature. I believe intake air temperature also plays into it too. It will also close the exhaust backpressure valve on the outlet of the turbo to aid in warm up as well.
i think it is a way to make sure you don't put it into gear with it idled up with out having to add a extra switch. most generally you have to apply the brake to put it into gear anyway
