Hello Gang, I have a 05 Excursion with the 6.0 Diesel. I am having trouble starting it when it gets warmed up( actually it wont start )When its cool in the morning , or evening its not a problem and it runs great , but after driving it for as little as 15 minutes if I shut it off , it wont fire back up until it cools off. I have been told that it is probably a Cam Shaft Position Sensor, does this sound right? is it a common problem with the 6.0? If this is not it , does anyone know what it might be? The local Ford dealer said it might be an O ring that has cracked . I am no mechanic , and really dont want to take it to the dealer. How easy is this sensor to replace? I appreciate any help you can offer . Thanks Scott
It is NOT the cam shaft position sensor. They are virtually bulletproof on a 6.0 diesel. Your problem is most likely the Snap To Connect (STC) fitting that connects the high pressure oil pump to the rest of the high pressure oil system. It's a very common problem on the 05 6.0 and there is an upgraded part to fix it for about $40. The cost to get it put in is about $1400.
Do a search for STC fitting and you can find all the information you want to read. You can even get installation instructions. How mechanially minded are you?
First thing I would be doing is hooking up a scanner and check for codes, if its a cam sensor it "should" be setting a code.
If its only when the truck has been running it kinda sounds like a STC fitting thats on the High Pressure Oil Pump, your old fitting has been replaced by a updated part. This fitting tends to start to leak more once the truck has warmed up and leaks so much the injectors are not getting enough oil pressure for them to fire the engine.
Thanks guys, I have had this problem for the last couple of months and it has only thrown a code once, it was the Cam Position Sensor, but the service guy at or local dealer said it was likely the High pressure O ring you spoke of. I was hoping it was just the sensor. I am not that mechanically gifted..lol. When this first started , I thought that perhaps I had a battery going bad (one of them was week ) so I replaced them both , and I didnt seem to have any problem for a few weeks , then it happened again, this time (my fault) I burned up the starter turning it over for to long , I changed the starter myself (pain in the A___ to get that one bolt). This too seemed to make the problem go away, but know it does it all the time. Is it a bear to do without knowing what I am doing? Thanks again Scott
You can get a cam position sensor code simply from a crank no start event. It doesn't mean the CPS is bad. Usually the only thing that fails on them is the o-ring and that is a small leak.
