Starting with synthetic oil!

My DD yota wouldn't start this morning(236,000miles on it), so I had to take the truck. It was below 20 degrees out and had been a cold night. The truck started right up and no romps! I'm impressed with the difference the T6 Rotella makes.

Also, the truck had been sitting for 4-5 days since I last drove it.

Syn

the synthetic sure does make a difference on winter starts. Mine won't start below 5 degrees with dino, but -15 on syn and she fires, albeit a bit noisy. I run dino in summer, but syn for winter in MT, its worth every penny here to me.

Not plugged in. Just waited till the glow plug "wait to start" light went out and started the truck.

Mine would start on regular dino at about those temps and colder, but I would get the romps for a little bit. So far with the synthetic, no romps.

no plug

Clint, those temps are without plugging in for me as well, -15 is as low as I have tested not plugging in, but I would guess -20 or -25 is doable without plugging in. All new GP's at 120,000 miles, all batteries clean and nolaxed, all grounds cleaned, DK in fuel, fresh air filter, fresh fuel filter, and the syn oil and its a regular winter machine.

Well that good news.. That proves to me that synthetic oil is the way to go when it really gets cold ... I bet with the savings in electricity (those engine heaters draw around 1000 watts), the extra cost for the syn oil is not much different that using dino.. They say you get better fuel economy also..another savings. I use it year round.

Fuel Economy

I haven't seen any savings in fuel economy, it would have to be miniscule if at all. i get 16 mpg on summer fuel, and 15 on winter blend running around MT at 80 mph, maybe if I slowed down i would see it, but the only thing that seems to change my fuel economy is when winter blend hits the tanks in October here. I switched to syn mid november this year, and it didn't change, still 15mpg.

On the flip side, that easy roll over is most likely adding longevity to my starter and batteries, as well as my power bill that you mentioned.

That one synthetic oil change a year saves me plenty of green, but the peace of mind that my truck is going to start when I walk outside into the blizard we are currently having this very moment is priceless.

what is your DD Yota?
I used to drive a 98 Tacoma
I ran Mobile 1 5W-30 in it all the time, started up every winter day in Chicago winters!! I run Shell Rotella 15W-40 in my Powerstroke! but many run Shell 5W-40 with much success

It is a '95 Corolla and I think it is probably due for plugs and maybe some other stuff. It gets pretty minimal maintenance other than regular oil changes and stuff that is needed.
