I have a 2005 f150 supercab Lariat 4x4 with 5.4 3v Triton. I recently experienced a problem that when in 4 wheel drive traveling straight in either forward or reverse everthing seems fine, but, if i turn the wheel either direction I get a loud dull squeal that sounds like old dirty drum brakes squealing---and---it starts binding up and will bind up to the point that if you let off of the accelerator it stops like you applied the brake. No problems in 2WD either. Any ideas out there this problem almost seems to backward to problems i have read about with IWE problems.
Mine was binding like that when I first test drove it at the dealership and was circling the parking lot, but I think that was normal. Engaging 4 wheel drive on dry pavement and then making sharp turns isn't exactly what the engineers had in mind. I've since tried it on a snowy road and it acted like it should. But since there was no squeal, and I don't know the exact conditions you were experiencing, I can't say that it's the same thing.
the binding is normal when turning in 4wd on a high traction surface. I've had this problem when using 4wd on hard packed snow or gravel, just take it easy and the tires should slip enough on these surfaces to not cause any harm. If you're having this problem on pavement the tires will not slip enough and you're asking for trouble.
Probably not, i have 273,000 miles on this truck and I bought it new. It has been one awesome truck and quite the powerhouse, with unbelievably great performance and few issues. I am 53 years old and at one time was a Ford certified mechanic and this has been the best truck , or vehicle for that matter that i have ever owned. This just started two days ago and it was on snowy soil, not hard top pavement when it happened. I haven't even had a chance to look into it yet, just thought i would throw it out there and see if anyone else has had a similar issue before i even got started on it.
I did a little playing with it on the way to work this morning and I now believe it is definitely a problem with the IWE and associated vacuum system. May have more than one issue going on here considering the miles. Will update again later.
