I have a 79 250 that is a project truck and when i turn the rear end binds up and acts like it has a locker in it. Is there a easy way to find out if there is some sort of locker in the rear or that there is some problem with it. It feels like its in 4 wheel drive but it isn't and I jacked up the front end and verified that both wheels are unlocked. plus there is no drive shaft up front right now.
Dana 70's were not installed in F250's, F350's only.
An F250 of this vintage could have either a Dana 60 or Dana 61-1.
If the AXLE code listed on the Warranty Plate begins with a letter: Limited Slip. If with a number, no Limited Slip.
The Ford rear axle ID tag was installed under one of the bolts that retain the inspection cover to the housing. Today, many are missing.
The Dana rear axle ID tag is bolted to the housing adjacent to the inspection cover, has a 7 or 8 digit number stamped on it, like this: 603010-1 or this: 603010-11
The rear isn't original to the truck so it could be anything i jacked it up and when i spin the tire on one side the other side spins @ the same rate and direction so i think that means its a locker. and the codes i could find on the rear are as follows. c34835 2-70 A35278 no tags remain anywhere.
Just open it up. Why are people so scared to do so! It might be a powr lok which would be a cool posi or the damn thing could be welded up. Why wouldn't you want to look inside to inspect for broken teeth and just a replacement of old oil.
If it's a Detroit locker I'll take it off your hands...Lol
Take a pic if you can
Well if I were to take the cover off I really wouldn't know what Im looking @ do you realize that i have no idea the difference between an open diff or a locked diff so I could sit there all day and stare but still not get anywhere. but if you could tell me what to look for inside there maybe I would take the cover off and check. Thanks, Matt.
