Exclamation 2000 7.3L PSD: Oil leak @ starter?

It's raining today, but I will update with a pic as soon as I can. Is it possible for me to have a slow oil leak around my starter on my PSD?

It's not really leaking (I've been watching the driveway and my oil level) but it's looking 'oily' in that area under the engine, and there is usually like a drop of motor oil resting, but not actually falling from, the transmission bellhousing and as best I can tell the potential seep is coming from around the starter.

I've got 65k miles on the engine. I'd like to head off a problem if I have one.

It could be from their - or from the Turbo Pedstal .. This was the most recent oil leak on my truck that I had fixed. ..The gasket went bad , and was dripping oil every so often around the starter area....

I dont believe the starter will be leaking oil, unless there is a real serious problem. If you look you will probably find the oil is running from somewhere else and following the block towards the starter. Sometimes you have to put yourself into the mouse mode and crawl around the engine to find the leak. If you're under the warranty mileage or time, let the dealer worry about fixing it.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Typically, anything that leaks in the valley ( high pres pump, lines turbo pedastal o-rings) will leak out of the trans inspection cover hole, in the center of the cover. It is possible that the high pressure oil galley plug may be leaking. These plugs are at the end of the cylinder head and is abt 1-1 1/4" in diameter. Good luck.

Thanks. I've got a few (unrelated) parts on order. When they come in, I'll take her in to the dealership and let them take a look. I'll be printing out this thread to send with it!!

I'm guessing this would fall under my 100K engine/powertrain warranty

Xanthias,

One of our service trucks has the same leak. We have crawled under, over and around the engine and cann't find the origin. It is in warranty so we took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything either. The leak is still there so we are getting our fleet mechanic to look at it later this week. If he finds anything I'll let you know. If your dealer finds something, please post the results. Good Luck

Xanthias,

Yes this does fall under the warranty, however you will have to pay a $100 deductible. Just make sure they fix it right the first time. I had an oil leak a while back. First it was the rear main, then a valve cover gasket, then the HPP. Well, the first two they charged me each time, and needless to say I was p***ed. The problem was an oil leak, I get the truck back, same day it's leakin when it gets at highway temps. Point is, make sure they fix the leak the first time, and if it still leaks, don't let the juice you for another deductible if they didn't fix it right the first time.

Have the dealer add dye to the oil. It's easier to pinpoint the leak that way.

Yep, my service guy mentioned the dye. Going in tomorrow for this and a couple of unrelated things. Will post results.

I had oil leaking by my starter and it was the CAC hose on the Pass. side of the engine leaking oil and running down that side of the engine. I tightned the clamp on the hose and the leak stopped. The dye is a great way to find those small leaks, but you may have to put on a 100 miles to get the dye visable, unless its a real bad leak. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update: got the leak identified. It was dripping from the turbo to the intake connector tube. Had to replace the tube.

Part numbers were:
FMC4tz8287A (Clamp)
FMCf81z6c640ca (intake connector)

The intake connector part is expensive, at $54.
