Does 6.4 run Without PCM/DPF installed

What exactly happens when you run you 6.4 without a DPF and leave the PCM as is.
1.Will it still regen? If so does that mean you'll have high temp exhaust exiting tailpipe.
2. Will the truck go into a limp mode?
3. Will it never go into regen because there is no difference between the bp sensors to trigger regen?

I've looked through the site and can't find this out, if it is posted and I missed it, I apologize. I've read lots of second hand opinions regarding this issue and would like to hear from anyone with a knowledge based techincal exposure to this issue. Thanks for the input.

If you do not alter the PCM programming then eventually you will be in Eternal regen. Probably will do a shut down as well.

I've heard it will get stuck in regen since the exhaust temps won't get high enough to make it stop, then eventually it'll shut down if it doesn't burn something up first.

Sam

sdetweil.....so the system activates in 600 miles and puts fuel into the exhaust, does this cause (literally) a flame? or higher temps? or the fuel just passes through the exhaust and out the tailpipe. Once it reaches the 600 mile and triggers regen does it stay in regen (adding fuel) until you put it in park as the Ford system usually does or as Senix stated it will occur continuously? If the truck is put in park will that reset the 600 mile Ford failsafe back to zero or is it 600 miles since last regen?

well, once it goes into regen, it looks for a signal to say that the temp is up, vs the pressure.. and it doesn't get the signal, so it keeps throwing fuel in til it gets there.. uh.. never.. there is no fire, so it just sprays fuel constantly.. you put it in park, it stops, then in drive, hasn't completed regen so it starts again, repeat til done (never)..

so the programmer just sets the conditions so the the failsafe regen never starts

diesel doesn't burn on its own without pressure, so there is no fire except in the special conditions inside the DPF.

Sam, why would it ever go into regen. The sensor would never send the message that the DPF was getting full and needed burned, right? On edit, never mind, I found it in your explanation. And, I guess you're absolutely sure about the 600 mile regen regardless of pressure. Wonder if anyone has ever tried it and if so what happened.

It has a default max mileage that makes it go into regen. Every 600 miles it does it, whether it's needed or not.

So rather than remove the DPF and replace it and retune it to stock, if you just wanted a stock tune wouldn't it be easier to defeat the default Regen and just keep on trucking?

unfortunately the DPF WILL fill, and the engine will not run any longer,
exhaust pipe effectively plugged.
