V10 noise on startup (not piston slap)
Hello All,
I am a new Super Duty owner (as of 3 days ago). I have never owned a ford before, but I really love this new truck. The only concern I have since picking it up at the dealer, is a noise that the V10 makes when I start it in the morning. The average temp that last couple of days is around 5 to 10 degrees. When I start the truck in the morning, then engine makes a very loud sound for about 10 to 15 seconds then goes away. The best way to describe the sound is it sounds like a power stearing pump that is going dry.
I dropped it off at the dealership to get an inspection sticker and mentioned the noise. I am hoping that it is only a matter of low fliuds somewhere.
I am curious if anyone else has seen or heard of this problem. As I mentioned, this motor/truck has less than 100 miles on it. As soon as the weather breaks, I hope to get some pictures.

It is normal for the V10 to scream at subzero startups............that is why they recommend 5w20...........I live in Albany, NY.so I know the sound well..........just let the beast warm up for 10 minutes so all the fluids become fluid before cruising on out in a minus 25 wind chill.

It is completely normal for the power steering to make that noise at very cold temps. It even states in the service manual.
Don't worry too much about it. But you can solve it by either...
1. Switch to a snythetic PS oil (may not help)
2. Move to where it is always warm.

Also, just an FYI. Wind chill only matters on skin. Metal, wood, automotive fluid, thermometer...(basically any inanimate object) do not react to "wind chill". It is only how it "feels" on our skin....
