Looking at/for a 2000ish Ranger Supercab for my 17 year old Great Niece, is there anything special or troublesome to look at/for with this or possibly a '99?
i have a 2000 2wd 2.5, manual with 150,000 miles.
no issues other than normal wear and tear such as balljoints, IAC's.
The 99 and 2000 4.0 engines were junk because of the marbling issues but the 3.0 and 2.5 are good.
Check auto transmission for filter and fluid replacement. Ditto on the 3.0, but there are issues with the use of ethanol in the flex fuel trucks wherein the flex fuel module costs hundreds to replace if it goes bad. So get one that the owner didn't use ethanol on a regular basis or ever.
I have a 1999 extra cab that has some problems when I first got it. The blower didn't work correctly, that was solved by a new resistor. The passenger door key wouldn't work, locksmith fixed that. The gas guage didn't reflect low fuel correctly, I dropped the tank and took out the fuel pump and sender. Didn't detect any problems and put it back in, seems to be working correctly now. The transmission gear indicator broke and it doesn't show the correct gear, the replacement part is 30 dollars and a bit of a pain to put in. Gets a solid 21 mpg, runs freeway speeds with no problems. The front grill support was broken and the headlights didn't shoot straight, that was a 100 dollar repair and I had to take the grill off to install. It's got 165,000 mi and I see no problem with getting well past 200,000.

I am partial to the 2.5. they are pretty indestructible and the m50d 5 speed manual is pretty tough also............and any truck that age depending on location might have the rusted hangers and shackles on the rear leaf spring........
* I am with gk50 I don't know the exact years maybe 99 but some of the automatic transmission are not the best.
Thanks for the replies so far guys!! Is the 2.5 a V6? is it a Ford engine? is any year 4.0 any good? the 2000 I'm looking at right now has about 150k and can be had for around $3500-$4000. its a SuperCab (4doors) XLT 2wd with a V6 I think but not sure what size......
Guys, I now have the VIN on the truck I'm looking at: Is there something I can tell what V6 it is or if its a Flex-Fuel truck??
Also, Can someone who has a subscription run a carfax for me please?-this is a private owner truck and he says he bought it from Avis just before it was a year old and he has owner it ever since for 9.5 years-so my thinking should show a title with his name on it being transfered in 2001 sometime if he is telling the truth.
Thanks for this info and links!! It shows a 3.0 engine so thats good, also shows flex-fuel and the owner says its not a FF vehicle-I asked him if it had the little green emblem on the tailgate he says no though hes owned it since 2001 bought it from Avis rental before it was a year old-it has "average" miles for the year 155k that works out to just under 15k which I understand is the national average miles....
Anyway I'm most likely going to take a look on Tuesday.
Do the (Quad-cab) SuperCabs have seats in the rear? I really can't see them in the pics he has sent me-my friend has an '04 Edge SuperCab and he has no seats back there and his truck only has 2 opening doors.......I'm learning about late-model Rangers-I've had an '85 & '88 back in the day. Thanks Again for all the help!!!!!-Rick

I think the price is to high but things do change from region to region.....I took a quick look on cragilsit for you and I saw this........ CHEAP 1999 FORD RANGER
Do the (Quad-cab) SuperCabs have seats in the rear?
yes but you have to be a midget to use them and pretty much useless.
no such thing as a quad-cab on the ranger. it's an extended cab which really means nothing other than about a foot of almost useless space
I love having the ext cab for all the extra stuff I carry in the Winter, make some long road trips. Having the four doors is a plus. The "jump" seats in the back are really worthless but also were an option, had a couple both ways. My 4.0L died at 66k miles, blown gasket but a lot of them go to 200K.

I have a 2000 2.5 manuel, been a good truck so far with 112,000 miles, when I first got it I had to change the multifunction switch due to phantom wipers Ford did it for free, alternator went bad at about 60,000,was making alot of pinging and clanging at high speed sounding like bad gas, then I changed the plugs and wires and all that went away,I just got done changing the timing belt although the original one was in great shape and probably could have gone another 100,000
It wasn't that hard of a job really like I thought, but was time consuming just getting all the junk out of the way and my oil pump mark didn't line up like it should have so i just made my own mark to reference it.I have a buddy who has a 93 Ranger and he got well over 200,000 on his before it broke and left him stranded many miles from home..
