I use amsoil. I changed my fluids at 30,000 miles and I noticed that the 4x4 sound decreased, it is hard to hear it now.

Book fill volume - approximately 2 qts

When I did it, I put in 3 quarts to get it to the top (fill bolt).
I used Royal Purple Synchromax

Actually Ford specifies Mercon for the transfer case. (2 qt. or 1.9 L.)

I would also recommend a synthetic Mercon V product over the SP. I don't know why the SP wouldn't work, but I am usually conservative on fluids and filters.

I used Mobil 1 ATF in mine. Took just over 2 quarts to fill it to the hole.

I think V may also be better, V has a thicker viscosity than sp and lv

2 quarts of Mobile 1 Mercon V.

I drive it to get the old oil warm, I do not jack up truck to it is level, remove both plugs. Drink beer to give it time to drain. I found a hose that will screw into the fluid bottle that is perfect. I run it to the top fill hole there will be about a pint left. I drive it in 4x4 for a few hours, then check the level again, I find that it is about a pint low

One of those $5 fluid transfer pumps to refill the ATF fluid can be handy on this job.
