About 20% of the time my 06 Mark LT will make a loud "thud" shifting from 1st to 2nd only. You hear it and feel it. It only happens under normal acceleration. I have about 62k on it. When I bought the truck at 38k miles the whole rear end was rebuilt because it was whining around 50mph. It's been whining again but I am not sure if the shift problem is related or not. Just to add about 3 weeks ago while making a hard right turn I heard and felt a huge bang from the rear end. It felt like someone ran into my truck. Again I am not sure if the two are related but any insight would be helpful.
I would say your rear end whine is totally unrelated, and totally annoying (mine does it too).
Your 1-2 harsh can be caused by a few things.
First off you may have a sticking or damaged check ball in your valve body creating the problem.
Another cause could be a damaged or torn piston/servo seal. This would create a hydraulic leak and require your transmission to increase line pressure for that shift.
Or you could have a worn out clutch/band. Your computer detects a slow shift, and will increase line pressure until it sees the shift speed up. When doing this you WILL feel it.
First step is to drain your transmission fluid, and strain it through a coffee filter.
If you find any excessive debris, I would get ready for a teardown...
I appreciate the advice. It is still under warranty so I will explain the rear end and transmission as two different issues. Is the recommended flush every 60k on the transmission?
The whine is much louder in the summer hot months but at the right speed you can hear it pretty well. When I first bought the truck it was really bad and they rebuilt it. I may let it go until it gets loud again next summer.
