I have had this whining noise that I'm not sure what it is. It sounds like its comin from the alternator area. There are three symptoms that are confusing me though, 1st is I only hear this whine as the weather starts getting colder and the colder it is the louder it is. 2nd is it only happens around 1800rpms like when it's getting ready to shift to the next gear. I can get it to whine when I'm parked and bringing the rpms up. 3rd is after 10-15 minutes when the truck is warmed up - no more whine. The truck is used very little duing the summer and I had this whine all winter last year. Alternator appears to be working fine and I do plow a few driveways every storm. Money is tight so I don't want to replace the Alternator an find it wasn't the problem.

whining noise.....we will have to speculate since no vehicle info and miles is provided. based on lessons learned....your results may vary.
a. one of the pullys on main belt has a bad bearing
b. main belt is too tight and has abnormal wear
c. air conditioner clutch is stuck and spins the compressor all the time
d. power steering unit has wrong fluid, is worn, is about to die.
e. external trans filter is clogged...don't ask me why replacing this eliminated a whine...but it did.
f. the whine is really a bearing in the drive train
g. one of your gear boxes is low on fluid
h. one of your gear boxes has the wrong fluid, probally too thin
i. its your tires that are whining
j. your engine oil is too thick and when its warm its thin and whining stops
k. a hundred other reasons
my truck is an 04 with 125K with the 5.4L motor. Some of your list can be elimited because it will do it while parked and not touching the power sterring. When I can replicate it while parked it is definety loudest with my ear almost on top of the alternator. Someone suggested a stethoscope and I remembered I had bought one years ago and never had a chance to use it. I dusted it off about a hour ago and it appears loudest with the stethoscope on the tensioner pully arm so I'm going to give that a try first.
thanks for your help
I will post back went I get it changed

so it sounds kie item "a" on my blind quess list. I had this problem with one of the pulleys that sounded pretty bad. I shot it with lube and it got quiet for a few hours but restarted...so I replaced the pully and all was well.
