I found a leak on mine today after replacing the fuel pump this spring. It leaked all summer and never caught anything on fire. :-) The leak became really bad and with fuel at 3.35 a gallon, time to fix it. The fuel was coming from around the top of the water/fuel seperator valve. When I opened it with the engine running it almost squirted out. Replacing that valve and some of the other "O" rings on the sensors this week. Hopeully this will end the leak for good.
Still a no go for me: went to Ford for the O-rings; TOO high; I about passed out; if I do it myself, will contact one of the vendors on the board here to purchase the O's. They did not even have O's for the Water Drain valve.
I tried AutoZone, Advanced, NAPA and CarQuest. Only Ford had the valve. I don't think I'll try rebuilding it with new "O" rings. Time is money to me. This particular truck is a 95 F350 dual rear wheel, dump chasis. She has well over 300K. Original engine, on it's third manual tranny the rear has been rebuilt too many times to rebuild it again so I am on the second rear end.
My leak was at the fuel return nipple at the back of the engine, just below the turbo. At least that was what I was told that piece was. I got an O-ring from Ford ($8) and I backed off the fitting hoping to be able to have enough play to replace the o-ring. Well, that wasn't going to happen and it would entail removing the other end of the fuel line from the injector pump and removing a bunch of turbo pieces to get to it. Not having enough time to do that, I coated the threads with Teflon sealant, tightened it back up and let it sit for a day. Started it up tonight and no leak. Hope that does it. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like that fix would work for any of the leaks everyone else is experiencing.
Finally got repaired!! Here is the news: I detected that the WIF & the Fuel Heater O's were leaking by placing some paper towels under that sector. Also could see some very slight seepage near the pump.
Our local county school bus technician works on 7.3's all the time & has his own shop.
Due to weather; no shop & having to have a venogram, I decided to get him to do the work.
Final Info: replaced fuel pump, fuel filter heater & O's @ WIF & Fuel filter heater. Also in the deal I got an IPR & an ICP (for my 97 that needs work).
No leaks & runs great. Thanks for all the input. 2 Vehicles running, 2 more to go.
Tater, Glad you found your leak, or leaks! There are so many places that fuel can leak. To just say there is one thing that always leaks would be a lie. I had a guy tell me to just give up I would never find the leak . I didn't listen and now, like you I have no leaks. Thanks for sticking with it and I hope you stick with FTE and help to solve other peoples problems. We are not always right. But its cheaper then paying some mechanics to screw things up and wonder if you got the shaft. Merry Christmas. Keep on posting brother!
