i just changed both batteries and the alternator ( thank god paz works at checkers-at her employee discount it was under $275.00 out the door for everything ! ) and everything seems good now-but...when i start the truck in the morning ( cold-well, cold for hawaii. 70 degrees or so...) i turn the key and step the gas peddle once to set the hi idle, when the wait to start light goes out i turn it over and it fires immediately, but then for the first 3-5 seconds it acts just like it does when you gonna run outta gas-the idle jumps and skips, just a bit, ( rpm surges, then resurges,etc...)and after a few seconds it runs like normal. no issues while driving, and it dont do it on warm restarts. just the innitial cold start. it wont die or anything, just seems weird as it has never done that before. hope its not a 'harbringer of doom' symptom. any ideas ? thanks to all.....

The correct starting procedure as mentioned by NorthernDiesel and 1994F250 is also printed on a sticker the sun visor on the drivers side. Along with starting procedures, there are a few other diesel specific notes and something about the shifting pattern.
Up here in MA, I don't set the high idle until I've got oil pressure. With a good fuel system and solid glow plugs system, I only have to set the high idle if it gets down in the teens and if I've parked the truck so the cold wind can go right into the grille and cool the engine even more.
As for the stumbling on a 70 degree cold start, I can't recall my truck stumbling on high idle in those temps. I don't even remember if my truck hits high idle at 70 degrees, I guess it must but I can't remember. I'd say run some cleaner through the fuel system. If you've done your return lines, then you should be free of air...assuming the lines back to the tank are in good shape.
