Oil leak

The last couple of mornings when I first start my truck I see a puddle of oil underneath. This morning I tried to search for it and didn't see anything up top, but when I looked underneath it looked like a line was leaking. It was on the bottom of the drivers side and it was the forward one of the two that are there. Has anyone had this happen or know how to fix this?

Rusty

It sounds like it may be the oil cooler is letting go in the cold weather. Here is a good writeup by Cody.

I will look at that. But it doesn't always leak. Yesterday it wasn't that cold and it didn't leak. It really doesn't look like it comes from that area though.

since it's black, I'm with Bob on this one. If had been red I would have said may-be a power steering line. Does it look like it is coming from under the exhaust manifold? A Picture from up under there would help.

So I decided that I was going to replace the gaskets. I called Bob and we decided that it would be better to just get it from the dealer because of the shipping time due to the holidays. So I got to looking at the parts store and found a gasket set that looks like it has all the correct gaskets but wasn't sure. Does anyone know how to tell what the gasket in a kit are for? The kit is CS9239, its a Felpro Conversion Gasket set. I don't want to get it and it not have the right gaskets.

Well I got it all taken apart, and boy did I make a mess. I couldn't get the heater element out so I got to drain it while taking it apart. Not fun. I did learn that you need to remove the filter prior to unbolting it. I can see why it was leaking now the o-rings were so stiff they just broke when I pried on them. When I took off the filter end I found a bunch of junk in the cooling passages, so I decided to blow them out just to make sure nothing was in them. I got everything cleaned up and ready to install but it got to cold so now I have something to do tomorrow.

Change your oil and although I don't usually recommend removing the oil from the HPOP in this case I am. If you had a bad o-ring you most likely got cross contamination between the oil and coolant. Check your degas bottle for oil scum. You may need to do a coolant flush and fill as well.

It's been sitting for the last week or so since it started leaking so I don't think there is any coolant in the oil. But I'm still thinking about changing the oil.

Don't forget to check the degas bottle for oil. No oil means no cross contamination.

Simple explanation of how the cross contamination can occur:

With engine running the oil pressure is higher then the coolant pressure. If an o-ring in the oil cooler that separates the coolant side of the cooler from the oil side has a leak then oil will be forced into the coolant side. When you shut down a hot engine the oil pressure goes to zero but the residual coolant pressure can force coolant back to the oil side of the cooler.

Ethylene glycol is especially hard on the rod, main, and cam bearing materials, which is why you don't want coolant circulating with your oil.

If there's a doubt, change it out!

Well I got everything back together, after some work. I had to use a ratchet strap to get it back together. Now I'm taking a brake because the front gasket is a pain in the butt to get back on. So I'll eat lunch and hit it again.
