WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON DASHBOARD ALONG WITH LOSS OF THROTTLE. SHUT TRUCK OFF AND RE-STARTED. NO PROBLEMS SINCE AND NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR WRENCH LIGHTS. CHECKED CODE WITH SCANNER; SHOWING P2104 CODE AND IS STATING NOT READY FOR EMMISSIONS. P2104 IS THROTTLE ACTUATOR CODE. FROM READING POSTS, IT SOUNDS LIKE THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. MY QUESTION IS; SOME THREADS SAY YOU MUST REPLACE THE WHOLE THROTTLE BODY AND OTHERS SAY I CAN REPLACE JUST THE SENSOR ON THE SIDE OF THE THROTTLE BODY. I CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE TBS BOLTED TO THE SIDE OF MY THROTTLE BODY. DOES THAT MEAN ALL I NEED IS A SENSOR?? MY TRUCK IS AN '05 WITH A 5.4L ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE GREAT. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME GUYS...
Any ideas yet if I should / can replace the throttle position sensor on my throttle body? I would like to order it right away if it can be replaced. Thanks
This seems to happen when you over rev the truck doing something in it. This happens a lot when I am playing in the mud with my truck, of course my truck isn't much fun in the mud these days because of the issue I am having.
I heard replacing the TPS requires a pcm re-flash to make the pcm recognize the new TPS. I also heard some people who put new TPS's in and just unplugged the neg battery cable. I honestly wouldn't worry about it till it does it again. I don't see why you'd have to replace the whole Throttle Body. Being an 05 the TPS ought to come on out with no issues, similar to the way MAF comes out. If you're really concerned about it, go to the dealer and expect to be raped by the price, but buy a TPS from them, and slap it on.
I don't think you'd have to re-flash the PCM though if you got a generic TPS from autozone or something. Its just one thing I had read. Good luck.
It has not done it again, And I have reset the error code with my scanner. The only reason I am still looking at fixing the problem is because my scanner is still telling me the truck is not ready for inspection. I have no green light, Which means there are sensors that are not communicating. I would like to take care of that now, Instead of waiting till I have to get emmissions inspection done. Thanks for the reply
I had this same problem tonight on the highway. Wrench lit up doing 65 then just lost all power. The engine was still running but it just did not respond at all. I shut off the truck and restarted and no problem. Now this is the 2nd time it happened. In similar fashion it happened last week on the interstate only it stalled out. The dash lit up like a christmas tree and i lost all power even steering which was not fun on the interstate. I turned the key all the way off and restarted. It ran fine up until tonight. I have a friend who has a shop and he checked the codes (sorry i don't have them right now) and there was quite a few but they all relating to the throttle. I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this and if so what the issue was. I will post as soon as i find out anything from my friend as well.
My 04 was doing the same thing. I took the air cleaner housing off and cleaned the throttle body up good with a rag and carb cleaner. That was a couple of weeks ago and the truck seems to idle smoother and overall performance is way better with no other problems. Maybe you just need to give it a good cleaning. You may also want to check all the grounds as a bad ground can make the pcm do funny things.
I think I'll clean mine before I put a new TPS on. Should I take the throttle body off to clean it or can I do a good enough job with it on? Also I keep hearing about this Sea Foam treatment, Any body have any thoughts? I know Amsoil also makes a foam spray treatment for the throttle body as well.
I did mine with everything in place except the cover. Just use 2 hands and hold the butterfly open and clean it up good. I did run a couple cans of seafoam throught it first but it still had the rough idle and the fault kept coming on so I decided to take the few minutes and clean it up right.
