I mounted a 15x10 wheel with a 275/60R15 tire today to see if I like it before buying a full set. Guess I didn't expect the combo to stick out of the wheelwell by 3", so was somewhat disappointed with it.
I have lots of thoughts, but prefer to hear yours before sharing mine. Please let me know what'cha think.
The way you describe it it sounds like it looks good(to me anyway). As long as the cops don't care, and they don't rub at all(no matter how much the wheels are turned) then I'd go for it. At least on a 4x4, might not look as hot on a 2wd.
Usually with wheel and tire combos that stick out to that degree are going to put stress on front end parts that aren't designed or intended for that type of stress. Parts wear out early or if the combo is heavy enough, parts will break.
Auto manufacturers design components to operate with specific size wheel and tire combos and any other combination could cause undue stress and possible failure. Personally, I like the way some combos look and if front ends are made stronger for that purpose, I think its awesome.
I have a neighbor who is constantly replacing parts due to his desire to run 22" rims on a vehicle designed for 16's. The weight of each wheel alone is 3 times that of the original combo. The 22" combo costs more than his car, and that makes me laugh!

Well I am sure the folks at Ford knew someone was going to put giant tires on their trucks eventually so I wouldn't worry about any catastrophic breakage. However it may cause more wear than the smaller tires, but I don't think you will notice much difference.
I'd had most of those thoughts myself. In fact, I remember like it was yesterday, although it was 40 years ago, when I was in engineering school and saw someone with tires sticking out of the wheel well: Do they have any idea what they've done to the geometry of the suspension? Wow! Think of the load on those bearings!!
Just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me. Thanks for the input.
Rogue Wulff: Apparently "Lost" is somewhere near me as you've got the Tulsa streets pegged. I can just imagine hitting one of those holes with the 1875 lbs of rock I had in the bed last summer.
Yep, I'm in creek county, just outside tulsa, in another town that starts with an "S".
Some of the unpaved roads around here are smoother than tulsa's roads......
Think of it this way, take a 5 pound bag of sugar or flour, hold it in one hand down at your side. You can carry it around no problem, right? Now, hold your arm outstretched, with the bag in your palm, Things are a bit different now, eh? your arm wears out a bit faster now doesn't it? That is an easy way to explain what happens when you put on wheel/tire combos with the wrong backspacing. And Ford did not design the suspension with bigfoot in mind...
