100% sure it's the idi. I can show engine pics to prove it if necessary

I'm leaving the day after tomorrow for a pretty long roadtrip with the truck... I would have preferred to get familiar with it first (driving it around town for a couple months), but I'll just have to hope everything goes well. So far it behaves well, but I haven't had it for more than a few days.

Is there anything on which I should keep an eye?

fuel leaks.
oil pressure.
water temp.
if you plan on using both tanks, try them both now,so you can tell if the fuel selector works.
watch the fuel level when a tank gets close to 1/4 tank.if you notice it missing, switch tanks as soon as you can!
don't be afraid to take a spare fuel filter and a jug of diesel with ya.
check your spare tire of course.
try your e-brake.if your brakes fail, its good to know you have a way to stop. least ya have the manual,so you can downshift in a hurry to help bring things to a halt quicker too.

Thanks!

Oil pressure: according to the oil pressure gauge, it's fine. Is there anything else I should check beyond that?

Fuel tanks: there's fuel in both and they both work fine.

Water temp: the needle barely moves when it's hot... is that normal? I was surprised at how low that needle stayed when the truck was at operating temp. If that's normal, then it's definitely better than the opposite (needle at the other end)

e-brake works.

The truck's noisier than my Chevy at highway speeds... it's very noisy, in fact. I honestly think I'll have earplugs in the glovebox, for roadtrips...

Seems to be a mix of engine noise and wind noise...

If I get good average MPG on that trip and the truck proves to be reliable, I'll gladly live with the noise.

Replacing the 4.10s with 3.55s should help with the noise... or earplugs for now (much easier solution )

oh yeah,i forgot i had toned my interior down a lot.
im sure this isn't the best stuff, but i know it can't be the worse either lol
EZ Cool Automotive Insulation heat barrier and noise reduction for cars, trucks, classic cars, street rods and much more

way better in the cab now then i started.
i put it pretty much under everything now.doubled up over the trans hump.single everywhere else.
i think only under the headliner doesn't have it now.
way better.
i got off ebay.
i think only two of those 30-40$ rolls.whatever it is.

i knew it was working good, cus when i just had it under the carpet, the other places like the doors and firewall seems even louder lol.then i got another roll for the doors and behind the seat, behind the whole dash etc.etc.well worth it.

I love the sound of a diesel and don't mind it at all. Some people can't stand all the noise, but I rather like it, at least the disesl part

ive got dynamat on the floor, firewall and roof of the cab. it helps with the sound, but more importantly it helps keep the summer heat out and the cool a/c air in! especially when its 120 degrees out here, the a/c doesnt have to work so hard. thats another downfall of the crew cab, lots of space for the a/c to try and cool down. once i get the 97 doors on, im going to line the inner door skin and the shell behind the door panel too.

I love the sound too, but it's a matter of preserving my eardrums... I'll have a LOT of miles to do that coming week. Normally I wouldn't mind (around town and short highway trips).

That insulation stuff is a good idea, glad to hear there's a realistic solution to the noise problem.

The question is whether you have tested them at 1/4 tank. This year is the apocalypse of the fuel pickup feet, over on thedieselstop we've had like 10 people complaining about it about the same time that they switched to winter fuel. Presumably they've put something in it that is killing old rubber. I'm one of the people it happened to. When the pickup foot fails it dies only when low, and in at least some cases it is heat-dependent. The heat causes the foot to swell, but since it has a bypass and stuff in it the thickness and thus the rate of swelling varies, causing the part to warp every time the tank is used, and heated fuel is returned to the tank and dumped directly onto the foot because the design is retarded.
