Gas

The new Shell gasoline is even worse than expected. This is for 91 octane in the BMW, since I drive it a lot more than the Ford in the summer. As stated in my post above, the car is driven under the same conditions most of the time.

Baseline (Arco and Chevron) 1311 mi/54.6 gal=24.01mpg
New "higher mileage" Shell: 519mi/22.7gal=22.86mpg

The engine "felt" like it had slightly less power on Shell. Because this is Califiornia, all gasolines contain oxygenate all year, MTBE or ethanol.

I use either Murrys USA (Wal mart) cause of .03 cent a gallon discount with shopping card, or conaho simply because they are about all there is in this town. I used to run BP and Shell in Michigan. On a recent trip to texas i used a little bit of everything. Luvs seemed to last a little longer but i was only getting about 200 miles a tank. Funny when the wife was driveing truck was better on gas too. Maybe if i woulda kept my foot outa the carb it woulda been a bit better, but the 83 crown vic we brought back from texas didn't do much better anyway so oh well.

Arrow Gas

For those in and around CA, use 76 gas:

or any other gasoline that is MTBE-free:

I use the 87oc tane from Wally World, as it is usually the lowest price available. I have tried Conoco, Texaco, Exxon, etc and can't justify the added expense. I've not seen any performance related differances in the bunch.

When gas cost under a buck, I had brand loyalty. Now I go with cheap.

The local Safeway has cheap gas and with the 3 cents per gallon for club card, it is really cheap compared to most of the locals. But the picture changes almost every week. Sometimes Safeway is cheaper, sometimes ARCO(not as often lately) and other times the local no name. Usually Texaco, 76 are high. The Chevron is middle range, Shell is usually cheap but require you to use their card, least here abouts.

With 38 gallons per fillup, cheap is good. Cost me about $53 yesterday and that was just 30 gallons.

The highest price I paid was during the recent price spike from the so-called "Arizona pipeline" incident - $2.34 (91 octane, 76) and I get 10-11 mpg on a 38 gallon tank. whoo-boy...I've to find a more efficient vehicle.

I fill up with whatever is cheapest, or where I have a cupon.
