I'm looking at buying this 2006 f450 XL and my only reservation is, it does not have power windows or heated mirrors (I'm sorry but after I got it on my other dump truck, its a necesssity for plowing).
How easy is it to plug in power windows? Do I just need new door panels and electric motor assemblies? Are there existing pigtails inside the panel for power?
Same question for the power/heated mirrors basically... and any idea of a ballpark figure in parts to do this upgrade? I know the info is out there, but I figure some of you have considered this and know already. Thanks!
I don't know about the 2006, but my 2001 XL did not have ANY of the circuits needed for the power window upgrade. I made a whole new harness using in-door harnesses salvaged at a junkyard and used new wire doorpost-doorpost.
The power supply from the main power was not installed, including no contacts in the fuse box to plug fuses into. I had to create a whole power supply triggered by a relay tapped off power hot in RUN and ACC. I don't have "one touch down", "remote", or "delay" functions, just plain-jane up and down when the key powers up the truck.
The heated mirrors are easier, if you just want heat. Run two wires out to them from a switch. You can get hot in RUN power near the steering column from a customer access circuit. If you want the power mirror function, it is off to the junkyard again. I had to replace my door panels because they did not have room for the power switches. I don't know if the 06 was the same.
Good luck, it is a lot of work. I feel it was worth it.
Just my two cents but unless this is the only truck that's in your price range it seems like to me be your better off finding one with the features you need right off the bat.
Thanks for the info...anyone with any ideas about the 2006's as opposed to the 2001?
and he situation isn't that i cant afford another truck, its just that this one is such a great deal...
2006 450 xl 41,000 miles
mason body with extended sides
4x4
5 speed manual
6.0
brand new Boss poly power V XT 9'2" (same as my other plow, which is at least a $5500 plus)
$24,000
compared to what i'm seeing around, this seems like my best VALUE in a truck. (best return/investment ratio). Plus they keep calling me about it so I think i can get them down 2000 more.
Just got through adding an aftermarket power lock kit to my 2006 XL while I was installing a remote starter. After having both doors completely apart I can tell you that none of the wiring you would need is there. You'd be starting from scratch just like JockD explained. They do make aftermarket setups that might be easier to install. Good luck.
I got an 99' F350 CC XL package, quoted $500 to have all 4 doors PL installed and start diable alarm system. that dont cover PW. I put on new mirrors and bought the power ones in case i get a wild hair and dicide to wire them up. I have not done any research on PW yet.
