AOD shift problems- pretty long post, sorry.

My apologies for the long post but I want to make sure I relate all the details.
This is a 1988 Ford F-250, 5L, EFI, AOD.
A couple of weeks ago I noticed that on my first trip of the day I would stop at the keypad to enter my code for the gateopener. The vehicle is on a slight incline at this point. After I’m done I have to tickle the throttle a bit to get the transmission to go back ito gear. I noticed no shifting problems then. A few days ago I noticed it was taking longer and longer to shift into the next gear. Two days ago, a half hour into an errand, the shift delay was noticably worse. I turned around, came home and did some research on it.
Two things were mentioned. TV cable bushings (looked ok to my inexperienced eye) and fluid levels. The ATF level was right at the beginning of the crosshatched area and as the dipstick said not to add fluid if it was in that area, I did not add fluid.
The fluid looked pretty dark so I decided to change it. When I dropped the pan I found a plastic piece in the pan which turned out to be the factory installed dipstick plug installed at the factory. I removed the filter, cleaned it up and wiped the bottom of the transmission so I could see where this mystery plug came from.
I compared the old filter to the new one and the thing I noticed was that the grommet in the round port on the old filter was extremely worn.
When I poured the old ATF into a jug it looked almost as dark as old motor oil.
On my first road test, the transmission shifted smoothly and at the correct time. It got worse with each restart, though. Now, it is almost as bad as it was in the beginning except that now I have noticed that if I let off on the gas peddle when it is time, the transmission shifts even though it is a little abrupt. It may have done that before had I thought to try that but I’ll never know.
I’ve looked at the directions to adjust the TV cable and it doesn’t make a lick of sense to me. I got the part about removing the lock with a screw driver. They don’t mean to remove it completely, do they? Just high enough to clear the cable, right?
Holding the TV control lever back with a spring means the lever at the transmission end of the cable?
Where is the transmission outer TV lever? Rotate it 10-30 degrees which way? Clockwise or counterclockwise?
Two more things that may or may not be factors. Two months ago the truck severely overheated because of a stuck thermostat. A week ago, I pulled a 32 foot RV for a total of 6 miles.
OK, I’m done. If y’all haven’t fallen asleep reading my post, I’d really appreciate a little guidance here.

You are correct. It's a 1988 and if the plug in the pan is the proof, the transmission has never been serviced. Scary, huh?
No, I did not drain the converter. Someone told me it was difficult to do so I didn't do it. Afterwards I found out how simple it was using the return line at the radiator. Before I go anywhere I will make sure I do the whole thing.
I watched the video on adjusting the TV cable. That's it?
I watched the thing six times trying to see what I was missing. I'm going to go try it though.

It's perfect! I saw a video that made the TV cable adjustment look very easy and it was. The truck is better than it has ever been since I've owned it. Now I'll finish changing ALL of the fluid. Thanks to all.

Oh it's even easier than that, the converter has a drain plug so just remove the inspection plate and rotate it until the plug is at the bottom.
