Overheating FYI

Had a seriously insane/aggravating overheating problem.

Did all the usuals:
Checked the radiator for flow
Changed the t-stat 3-4 times
Checked water flow
Airflow thru radiator, removed condenser temporarily,
Replaced the fan shroud
Flushed the engine
etc, etc, etc...

With all that, ole Rocky still tried to over heat pretty easily in stop and go traffic. On the road, no problems.

Well, had my timing checked by another guy after running into a pinging problem on a notorious hill here locally. Found a problem with how it was setup by the PO. We retimed it again and what do you know, the truck is back to almost perfect from just a timing change. Never knew a 360 could be that particular about timing. Hell it may run too cool now. I will play with it some more and let yall know how it goes. I have only had the truck about 5 months now and am learning and relearning from her all the time. Shocked at how just a simple timing reset could alleviate an overheat issue that fast tho.

WOW!

Too much base timing will almost always cause overheating at idle... Something i have to watch on my 302 and 460 when driving in town as i run lockout timing on them both.

After the checking/ changing the first thermostat you didnt realize that wasnt the problem??

Work at a parts store as a second job and we have run into a bad batch of t-stats of late. Started with a 195 as is my habit, it was way too hot, went back to 180 and still think that one legitmately failed. Got another 180 and things actually got a small degree better. I may now go back and install a 195 for the winter.

Keep the 180, cooler combustion chambers mean you can advance the timing farther than you would with a hotter thermostat. The old "195 t stats are the only way" is an old school method of thinking.
