the reason to change the filter is to keep good quality fuel and not put a restriction in the fuel system causing the pump to over work or have a pressure drop across the filter starving the injectors

Reason: added stuff
I change mine annually - makes it easier to remember. Just put a note on my calendar as a reminder.
How long filters last has as much to do w/ where you buy fuel as much as the mileage. I buy fuel only at places that sell a lot.
Ford recommends 10,000 miles for severe duty driving or 15,000 for "normal" conditions. I just changed mine every 10,000 miles or once a year whichever came first.
