I've tried searching and didn't come across anything yet, so any help would be great.
The truck is a 2001 F250 V10 with 4r100 tranny. The trans shifts fine and is driving fine while in D, but I just noticed that I can not down shift the lever to 2 or 1 on the column. Tried putting it in 4x4 high and low as well and nothing. At a stop or moving it is no different. Anybody seen this yet? Thanks.
you physically cant move the gear shifter or it doesnt do anything? if it doesnt do anything, the 2001 4R100 has a defective diode from the factory that causes 2nd gear to fail. otherwise there is a small assembly at the side of the transmission with a plug on it where the shift cable connects. i had to replace mine as it was almost seized up. (also had to replace the diode $1000 later)
Physically I can't move the shifter down into 2 or 1. Like I said, it drives fine and shifts fine otherwise still, but I just noticed I couldn't downshift it manually. Just has a solid feel like the cable is bound up, but goes into drive fine. I'll take a look at the cable.
I would also have a look at the unit the cable connects to, not sure of the name but i know of a few people including me that had to replace it. The shifter was very hard to move through all gears though.
Shifts fine into all the other gears just fine from park to D. But it won't go past D into 2 or 1 at all and is hard like the cable is at the end of the line. I'll just have to get under there I guess and take a look at what might be going on. Maybe a rock is stuck in there or something.
Check to verify one of the two bolts on the shifter linkage under the dash didn't fall out. It's easy to check, pull the bottom cover off of the column and wiggle the shifter...you can locate the linkage connection under the dash and you should see two bolts (make sure they are tight) that connect to the shift linkage. Might not be the problem but very easy to check.
Sounds good, I'll have to check that later. I crawled under there this morning to take a look at the linkage on the tranny. All looks fine, nothing stuck in there or anything.

If the linkage is loose, your bolts take a #30 Tork.
Still having problems, but.... shifter was bottoming out on metal. So the shifter could physically go down no further. So put new bushings in shifter linkage. Also found that perhaps transmission arm to shifter cable bushing could be slipping so bought new cable. Cable with new bushing is cheaper than bushing by itself! Go figure! Also installed new filter, valve pack, aux valve pack and solenoid pack. But, still no first gear. Installed new cable and fiddled to attach pesky bushing when poof! Bushing lock flew up and off. Can't find it! :O It's up there some place. Spent two hours trying to find it, with flashlight, mirror and lots of patience. Still didn't find it. Looks like I'll be buying another new cable. I hate it when that happens! So........ where's that diode located that you guys were talking about? If it's inside the tranny I'm screwed. If it's outside, I can probably fix it myself! My biggest problem is.... I'm 72. I can get down to do the work, but someone will probably have to pull me up. Bad knees, ya know? LOL! Thanks to all of you for your responses
The diode that is mentioned above is the mechanical diode one way clutch. When it fails you will have no 1-2 automatic shift. I don't think that is your problem. It has nothing to do with getting the shift handle into the 1 position.
Did you install new a solenoid body and valve bodies to try and fix this problem? That's an incredible waste of money! ONy the main valve body could have any influence on the shift handle, as the manual valve is attached to the shift linkage. And the manual valve is in the main valve body. The other bodies have NOTHING to do with the shift linkage.
