Simple Rotor swap... ostensibly

I have a 1949 1/2 F1. I just did a tune-up, and the O'Reilly/Napa/Carquest database all recommended a rotor that doesn't fit quite right. It wiggles on the shaft, so needless to say timing the motor is pointless. It's a 239V8 and has never given me any problems. It will start and run on choke occasionally, but it's throwing spark everywhere. Is this a known problem? Wish I hadn't thrown away the one that was working fine. I thought I was doing preventative maintenance, and now I have a really sick pickup. Maybe as a half-year the part numbers are weird? Any and all help is appreciated.

I had a simalar experience with the rotor on a 6 cyl Mustang. What I did was to put a few wraps of electrical tape on the distributor shaft and all was good. Ran better too.
