HELP - with possible bad stock computer?
I Currently have 1990 Bronco with 5.8L and E4OD trans. The only thing that I haven't replaced or rebuilt on this rig is the computer.
1) Rebuilt motor last year - bored 0.30 over, mild Edelbrock cam & lifters, Edelbrock manifolds & Throttle body, the K&N filter system, new fuel injectors(19#) and new sensors on motor.
2) rebuilt the tranny twice - Second time in December 2002
3) rebuilt the transfer case - along with 2nd rebuild of tranny
4) rebuilt both diferentials with limited slip and 4.10 gear ratio several years ago.
5) added Flowmaster after cat exahaust.
I do not have headers yet but I do plan on adding them at some point
Every thing was running great until two, maybe three weeks ago. I was driving all day off-road with no problems, then when I was driving home on the freeway the engine cuts out. after about 5 minutes of scratching my head I was able to start engine and drive off. Then about 40 miles later the engine cuts out again and couldn't get it to start. On the way home, being towed, put three gallons of fuel to see if that would help - NOT. So I had replaced the in-tank fuel pump, which didn't help. I then replaced the ignition module and I was able to start it and go for a test drive. Well needless to say I couldn't get it above 2500 rpm's with out the engine feeling like it was sucking up air. Went to fill up gas tank, which didn't help either, so I started to get codes. Received codes 22 and 14, so I had replaced the MAP Sensor & distributer. It helped, but not much. I had replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pressure regulator(with a Holly adjustable type). Right now I have the regulator set for 45psi. When first installed presure was at 30 - 35psi. With what ever setting that I have the regulator set at, it doesn't help. At idle and when holding the throttle at about 2k to 3k rpm's(Parked in driveway) the engine runs fine. The problem seems to only happen while driving. Yesterday I had pulled codes again and received codes 33 and 95. I realized that a couple of vauum lines were broken so I fixed them. I cleared the codes and now get codes 11. Also, during this past week I had replaced the coil with MSD blaster coil, the original coil was okay.
Well as of last night when I finally called it a night. I was still able to drive it up to about 75mph at 2500rpm. When I flip the switch to take it out of overdrive and try to go any faster, that is when it starts spuddering like it just doesn't want to go beyond that. It's starting to be very frustrating.
Any help would be greatly apreciated. And, again, sorry for such a long post.
Thank you
Kimball

Up until today I was also getting code 44 in Koer test. Which was the oxigen sensor thinking that the fuel was too rich or too much fuel or something in the smog crap. In the koeo test, the only code I am getting now is 11(system okay). I just replaced the O2 sensor tonight. Which is one sensor I forgot to replace. Now I only get code 11 on both tests. But Still same problem with trying to get the rpms above 2,700. still spudders like it's missing or sucking up air. The fuel pressure seems to remain at a constaint pressure through out the rpm range while I am parked in drive-way.
I will try to see if there is a low voltage in the fuel pump wiring like you had mentioned in the next couple of days.
Also,
Would the speed sensor have this kind of effect?
Ijust realized that it would be the last sensor, I believe, that I have not replaced.
Thanks again
Yesterday after work I ran some more KOER tests again. Still code 44 was more consistent. This code appears just about every time if I let the code reader run by itself durring test. But when I hold the throttle at 3,000 rpms, durring test, I have received codes 45 and 46 at least twice if not three or four times. I kept re-testing to get these consistent codes to make sure. I think I may have received code 81, but have not been able get it again.
I had just double checked the timing the other day. Still set right at 10 degrees. The past few days I have noticed that when engine is cold this problem seems not to occure as much. And when the engine warms up, this spuddering starts to occure, especailly when tranny shifts into second gear. That's why I had asked about speed sensor.
As far as fuel pressure, I have had the fuel regulator adjusted between 30psi and 55psi, which didn't help at what ever setting. And the pressure seems to remain the same through out the rpm range.
I had a chance to talk with mechanic at local Ford dealer. I had explained to him every thing that I have done to try & fix. After awhile of talking he had sugested that the cats may be clogged. I had unbolted pipes from exhaust manifolds to see if there was any change - NOT.
Thanks again
