Hesitiation Problem
Good morning all. My 2000 Excursion (135k) 10cyl gas, driving on some back roads at approx 50 mph and after about an hour the vehicle start hesitating. Just felt like the engine was missing and increasing the throttle made it slightly worse. Selecting 2nd and around 2500 rpm was fine. By the time we got home it evened out and ran fine. The last time this happened was in Florida and I put it down to bad gas, ran some cleaner and filled with High Test and finally ran fine again. I would appreciate any suggestions on what to check next before taking it to the dealer witha blank cheque. Many thanks for any help................Dave

Where is the fuel filter on this model? It could be a good starting point.
I haven't touched the spark plugs, I've heard horror stories. I was hoping that due to this problem only showing it's head couple times and then clearing up that it would be more a fuel problem. The cracked spark plug boot, would that cause this type of intermittent problem.

Thanks jh818, I haven't looked too closely but I understand what your saying and I can see that a cracked insulation boot could cause this type of problem. It was a nice dry day so no puddles. I understand there are coils (or something) that attach to the plugs and heard there quite expensive. I told myself not to even look at them as I know I would do something I would regret, if you know what I mean! If I can find out where the gas filter is I will start by changing it and cut the old one open to check for debris or signs of water. It would be great to find a cause as it doesn't happen very often.

I'm dealing with this as we speak and there is alot of help around here. I went and changed all my coil packs, plugs, fuel filter, and air filter and it still did it. Today I added a fuel stabilizer, cleaned the MAF(mass air flow) sensor and PCV valve and so far so good...knocking on wood as I type!!! Mine has 140k on it so I'm not looking at the money I spent as a waste...I think the maintainence can only benefit the truck.
BTW - If you change the fuel filter, make sure to get the little plastic tool that releases the fuel line from the filter...it'll take you 5 minutes to do.

When this happened in Florida I put it down to bad gas and add two stabilizers to half tank and after less than hundred miles cleared it right out. I will change the filters (thanks for heads up re plastic tool) clean the maf and pcv and see what happens. Will let you know if I find anything relevant ....Dave

This hesitation problem got lots better since I use my regular fuel and filled up with hi-test. Now if sometimes does this hesitation on slow acceleration and for some unknown reason unplugged the cable that goes to the air cleaner and it seems after computer did it's thing and adjusted the idle it ran better except for shifting harder. I reconnected the cable and it ran great for sometime and is now starting to act up occasionally. The air cleaner is a K&N so is there a serviceable part inside?

Is this something that will throw a stored code? My pick up is doing the same thing. After 5-10 minutes, when accelerating 1000-2000 RPM, it will sputter. Once past that it is fine. The reason I asked is that I had it scanned for stored codes and nothing came up.

It takes a bit for it to start popping codes, but if you have a scanner on you should be able to watch live datta and see the problem cylinder/s.

have you ever had a scanner on it since having these problems? Plus I'm wondering since higher octane fuel helps if running an injector cleaner thru your fuel would help, or changing your knock sensor. I'm not a mechanic, just throwing out some ideas.
The electrical on the air filter side is tha MAF sensor. It reads amount of air coming in and adjust fuel mixture acordingly. You can get at it and use a spray maf cleaner on it, but you need to be gentle with it as it is fragile. You can search for the thread on here about it's care and cleaning. After cleaning make sure you unhook your batt cable for a bit to reset the computer as the computer will retain the strategies with in it. Seeing as you had it unplugged and it ran better could be the hind of it maybe needing cleaning it replacing as you are running the k and n filter it might have oiled it up not allowing proper reading for air fuel mix.
