I am looking for a list of some of the reasons cold weather (below freezing) can really hurt your gas mileage. Throw out the letting the truck warm up in the morning for 20 minutes. But stuff more like certain lubes need changed or any stuff that would cause a frozen truck to struggle and use a lot more gas.
I have noticed a pretty good drop in mileage since we started getting freezing temps here. I will have some time off around xmas that I planned on doing some work on the truck and am curious on a what I need to fix, lube, replace or just check out.
The biggest reason is the switch to a winter blend (oxygenated) fuel in most areas. You need to burn about 10% more to get the same power, so your mileage drops.
The engine takes longer to warm up so the ecu stays in cold idle mod longer. It injects extra fuel to get the cat to warm up. That and a lot of other things, heater on, blower full blast, defrost, oil is thicker. It all adds up.
