This is one of those questions that has a tendency to get certain people rowled up. Some guys on here run 15w40 some say switch to 5w40 and your truck will love you for it, and others on this site and others swear by 10w30 year round.
From all of the oil analysis' that I have studied 10w30 definitely has the best numbers, that is why I switched to Rotella t5 10w30 this weekend. In our engines 40 weight quickly shears to 30 weight where it stabilizes so running 30 weight is not going to hurt anything. In my opinion find out what your truck likes and run it.

I wish Ford would market their Motorcraft in 10W-30 like they do the 15W-40 in 5 quart containers, as far as I know Motorcraft is sold in 1 qt. containers. All the analysis I ever got back from Blackstone labs showed my Rotella 5W-40 sheared to 30W.

FYI

From Ford:
10W30 - recommended operating range (ambient temps): 0*F to 50*F
5W40 - recommended operating range (ambient temps): -20*F to over 100*F

Also, I go up to 6000 miles between oil changes and my 5W40 is still in the 40wt range (low end I will admit, but still in the range).

What brand 5W40 do you run, Mark?

I'm running Rotella T6 for the first time this oil change. It is most definitely happier on cold starts.

This is what I am reading from my owners manual,

10W-30 is good for -10 to 90 F.

I am on the Rotella T6 now. The only other oil I may want to try is the Mobil 1 turbo diesel 5W40.

I am also considering adding some ZDDP to the T6 next oil change - just as an experiment.

What is ZDDP and what is it supposed to do?
