I have had this strange, dull "rattle" type sound coming from my 302 engine for over a year now. It's not getting worse, and is only heard at idle when I have the hood up. The dull "rattle" goes away when I rev the motor up. It sounds like a loose pulley, but further inspection today with a piece of vacuum hose to my ear revealed it is the water pump itself. The water pump seems to work well; it's just slightly noisy but no leaks. I took off the water pump pulley, and the shaft doesn't seem to be loose.
I bought the water pump new from Ford about three years ago when I rebuilt my motor. The motor has less than 10K miles on it. Is my water pump on the way out? I checked the weep hole, and it is bone dry. Are the water pumps on these trucks supposed to be quiet, or is some noise acceptable?
Sometimes the belts get a glaze on them, and will make a noise as the squirm around in the pulley. You could wipe a little brake fluid on the belts with a rag and see if the noise goes away.
It sounds like you are pretty sure it's the waterpump, but the timing chains are known to make noise on these engines if you have changed from the plastic coated upper gear to a all metal upper cam gear.

Thanks, Franklin. The vacuum hose "stethoscope" test showed the most inconsistent and noisy sound coming from the water pump, so that was just my best guess. Again, the weep hole is dry so I wasn't totally sure it is the water pump.
As a matter of fact, my stock timing chain was changed for a Comp Cams timing chain (cast iron camshaft and crank gear sprockets) at the same time I replaced the cam. Assuming it is because I changed the timing chain, would it be normal for my timing chain noise to disappear as the engine comes off idle?
