'56 302/c4 swap - can stock crossmembers stay in?

Sounds like good advice. I'll fab a bolt-in unit after I have the transmission in and mounted. The chassis is boxed there, but I can weld some nuts on the back of the boxing plates. Either that or modify a stock crossmember to be a bolt-in.

Absolutely!! I've done it before. Actually I made a cut on each side of the crossmember and welded in two flanges on each side with bolt holes and made the center part unbolt and drop out.
