I have 1 1986 F-350 were the 351W was swapped for a 460 Carbureted. The 460 doesn't seem to be seated in the engine compartment quite right, very high in the front.
Would this swap have required more than just engine mounts to be changed? I was looking around salvage yard parts lists and came across a part called an engine cradle, what is this? Do I need one for my application?
The way it sits now has made a mess of the exhaust routing and matchup to the tranny.
Biscuit, These motors do tip up in the front a bit. You don't need an engine cradle. If it was changed out right, they would have just changed out the engine frame mount brackets on the cradle. You can look at your engine mounts to see what has been done. From the engine frame mount bracket up you should have a rubber mount, then a thin steel plate that bolts to the engine block. If you have this, then it is the right mounts for the year of your truck.
The rubber mount bolts to the thin steel plate with two bolts, which then bolts to the engine block itself. The regular 460 rubber mounts have 2 studs coming from them down through the engine frame mounting bracket. So if you get under it looking for the nuts for the engine mounts, you should see 2 nuts from underneath.
Is your truck a 2 wheel drive?

Pretty sure I follow that description but to be sure what is the difference between the 351W (original engine) mount and the 460? The real proble here is that there is next to no space to run the exhaust between the left side of the engine and the frame. Guy that swapped the engines notched the frame to fit the manifold in, I'd like to correct that. I am thinking that it has the wrong manifold.
It sounds like a car exhaust manifold was used on the passenger side. . You need a manifold from a truck or van to replace it. This will clear the frame. It makes me cringe when I hear of people notching a frame to do this.
Regarding the mounts, the factory 351W mounts had one stud coming from them and the factory 460 has 2 studs. Which from underneath you will either see 1 or 2 nuts coming through the frame mount brackets.
I have some pictures of what the mounts should look like. I will e-mail you.

I can't count the number of companies I have contacted that have no idea if their headers will fit my truck or not. Last person (no company mentioned on purpose) just didn't care. He said if they don't fit you can return them for a stocking fee and freight costs. The manifolds were $210 a peice! Though their site was really cool and had nice pictures of all the different options of stock manifolds for 460 throughout the years and w/ or w/o emissions. Hoping a salvage yard comes through for me at $100 a peice and $75 for the Y-pipe.
I've given up on using headers, I just want it up out of that frame so I can get it patched. Quiet is preferred since I pull a stock trailer and won't be using a rear exiting dual setup.
Superdave, do you know what diameter the collectors are and/or the exit of the stock y-pipe? Either going to run it into a Flowmaster 70 series single in/out or dual in/single out.
Someday when this truck is all done I'll get another to trick out, just to use all the tools again.
I know a guy with a couple of manifolds from a 78 truck with a 460.You could probably get them fairly cheap as they need new studs.E-mail me at ifergusson@sprint.ca and I will give you the info. if you are interested.
Biscuit, Stock truck or van manifolds sould not be to hard to come up with. It may take some leg work. E-Bay has them all the time.
ifergusson, may have a good lead on a set for you here. The studs can be replaced if you take your time and let them soak in penetrating oil. And I emphasize "take your time". Heat them good with a propane torch and back them out. Also he still have the flanges that go with them.
You would have 2 choices for your exhaust, you could buy a factory y-pipe for your application with a 460 in it or a muffler shop could build you some exhaust.
This sounds a little goofy, but I let mine set in a pan with used engine oil in it for 4-5 days. I layed them down with the flange end down where they were covered in the oil. Gave them heat and they come right out.
Thanks for the pictures. I'm saving this thread for reference and once I get the mounts squared away I will decide on what to do about the manifolds. Knowing I only need one side makes a huge difference. Still thinking about going stock and using a cat and pre muffler resonator to quiet her down and help the planet but gotta consider HP too. ANyway until then thanks on the motor mount front.
Sorry about that thought I sent you an email thanking you.
Pictures were great! They'll be a big help if I ever get past changing out the rear brake backing plat. Can't find the socket for the spindle lock nut.
