just pulled my 6.9 engine out and about to put the new one in and realized i don't know how to swap the torque converter/ flywheel over. It's probably easy but i'm pretty new so be nice. Thanks in advance
You will need a deepwell 6 point socket to get at the nuts that hold the t/c on the flywheel. I believe they are 14mm or 15mm. The nuts are located back in the deep holes on the engine side of the flywheel. Next to on of the nuts is the pipe plug that drains the converter.
Just an FYI, you should have unbolted the TC before pulling the engine out. There's a good chance of damaging the seals by leaving it on due to the lack of clearances when pulling the engine. Keep your fingers crossed!
You should replace the seal on the trans (front one) anyway while it is out. I would put the converter in the trans before setting the engine back in. Just to be sure it is fully engaged in the pump.
Just make sure when you put the torque converter back on you rotate and push it in at the same time. It needs to line up with three different grooves and if done wrong it will just bind up and destroy the tranny or flywheel.
ok how do i know if it is fully engaged it just "clicks" three times or is there another way. i'm planning on doing this today and am really not looking to destroy my tranny haha
also how important is it to change the seal. i was just looking at it and it looks perfectly fine. and if i really should change it how do i take it off, just tug at it wit ha screw driver or is there a smarter way
