I have a 1994 F250 pre powerstroke diesel. 7.3 L motor. Something has happend to my starter motor mount. I tried to start the truck and the starter motor just whirled with some grinding noise. I crawled under the truck and found that i could move the motor up and down so I thought that the bolts holding the motor on must have worked thmselves loose, but they were all tight. What ever the motor bolts onto has some how broken loose. Has anyone ever see or heard of this situation before?
Maybe someone didn't tighten the very top bolt tight enough (because it's a pain in the a*s!), and it loosened up. With the bottom ones tight, the starter is heavy enough and has enough force on it when cranking that it could be flexing the starter case.
The adapter plate bolts to the rear of the engine, then the bell housing bolts to the adapter.
And the starter bolts to the adapter.
If the bolts are tight, and the starter moves up and down, the adapter must be broken.
If you look just behind the starter flange, you can see the adapter going up from the starter.
About 3/4" thick up the side just in front of the bell housing.
Starter out.
Transmission out.
Flywheel off.
Now just two bolts hold the adapter to the engine block.
Dave,
You nailed it! The adapter is broken just above the starter. I don't think I will be albe to fix this one myself. Should I take it to a transmission shop, or do you think a regular repair shop will do?
Thanks!
Dan
First you need to find an adapter at a salvage yard.
The Ford 6.9 and 7.3 both use the same adapter from 1983 thru 1994 on the IDI diesel equipped trucks.
As far as changing it, anyone that can drop the transmission out and put it back in can handle the job.
And they need to inspect the flywheel ring gear teeth and the starter bendix teeth while the tranny is out incase they are damaged.
What tranny do you have?
I ask because that is the first time I have ever hear of that happening.
Hi..could anyone tell me if the IDI engine/trany mount plate is the same as the PS mount plate? My starter mount broke off (94 f350 IDI turbo/5sp). I have access to a mount plate from 95 PS.
Also is the mount plate the same on autos and zf5s??
Thankyou for any info.

the plate is not the same from the psd and the idi. the plates are the same for auto and stick shift transmissions. t-18 t-19 c6 and e4od. pm me, ive got an extra one here. im just north of fresno.
Great, your info and generous offers are much appreciated. I am going to try the local scene before I hit ya up though.
I should add that I saw a few of them on ebay and they claimed they would fit from the 80s through 97+...kinda confusing.
Thanks for the help!
ebay items claim a lot. i could be wrong, but the bell housing bolt patterns are the same, but the adapter plate isnt. im sure someone else will chime in.
