Towing twin Axle 6000 lbs

I tow a "V" nose 7x12 twin axle. 13,000 miles of mostly city driving. Meter says 10.2 mpg. I reset it after most fuel fill ups and it always end up at 10.2. Bad as this is my 2008 got 8.2 mpg pulling the same trailer. Stop and go kills mileage.

Stop and go definitely kills you especially with a trailer. My commute to work is just over 8 miles each way with it's share of stops along the way. Mixed in with that I usually get 100+ mile of decent driving plus maybe 50 miles of highway on every tank. I've been seeing 16.2 to 16.5 on the information center. Overall for almost 3000 miles so far it's at 16.4 mpg. That's about where my 6.0 was for this time of year.

I have found that according to our fuel pump the gallons used is off by about 1 gallon ever time. If I account for the 3.5% that the odometer is robbing me and use the actual gallons pumped, I usually come up within a tenth of a mpg of what the dash says anyway. It's close enough for me to rely on it, but then again I always found the one on the 6.0 to be pretty close also.

Exactly. I've been waiting for a hundred gallons to go through before I come to any conclusions but I'm down 2 miles to the gallon also. Curse that #1 diesel!

500 mile trip trom North Carolina to Ohio, 18.5 going, 18.1 return. No trailer, running at 75 mpg. I don't know if I had winter blend in 1st tank, but I'm sure the return trip I did.

Here's mine, I've been tracking for the last 4 fill-ups.

Mostly rural highway driving at around 60 MPH, with some city and stop-and-go in there as well as some towing.

2000 mile round trip from Houston to Ruidoso NM. Included driving around in small towns at 35 MPH, etc. over the course of 5 days.

The average was 19.2 MPG (not hand calculated) The mileage killer was of course climbing steep grades of the Rockies and the 80 MPH speed limit in the Texas hill country from outside Kerrville to Fort Stockton.

I did notice that the Odometer is off by 3.5%. Traveling 200 miles (highway roadside markers) the truck logged 193 miles on the lie-o-meter. Additionally I had ~500#'s in the bed, 350#'s in the cab and used PS silver additive (since truck was new).

Checked at several speeds on the flattest roads, where possible (the 80 MPH limit was only through the hill country). It was not overly windy and used cruise control most of the time.

65 MPH = 23.8 MPG
70 MPH = 21.1 MPG
75 MPH = 18.7 MPG
80 MPH = 16.3 MPG

Of course there are many variables, but I contend that at 60 MPH I would have seen 25 MPG. Not bad for an 8000# truck.

My 08 6.4 with 63k on the odometer averages 12.9 mpg on my daily commute of 25miles 18 of those miles on the toll road at 75mh, towing I never got more than 10 mpg 32’ condo and a Rhino in the back. But the biggest irritation of all is when it regenerates I was looking at about 8 mpg and for some reason it always regenerated three times in a row that kills a tank of fuel in a hurry luckily I had a long commute to let it doo it’s thing and this is the main reason I popped for an 2011, long and Black.

How where you able to do 35 MPH in Ruidoso?

I thought 15MPH was the norm

MORE OR LES, since you are the OP, I assume that you are really interested in the MPG so I'll do the best that I can to explain.

I can see where 15 MPH may be the norm (although 25 is the speed limit) due to all of the boutique shoppes and such. But, we were there on Thanksgiving week, stayed in a cabin in the outskirts of Ruidoso and also traveled on Mechem Dr. and the like.

So my statements (as indicated) were to provide the average MPG for the entire trip in order to give a flavor of the conditions that were associated with that. It was not my intention to provide turn by turn directions and speeds.

To be honest -- there are many threads that have discussed the MPG question and clearly you could have searched them (see the 2nd post), I was only trying to contribute to your thread.

If you were only being sarcastic or humorous, I apologize for this post.

I don't think he was trying to attack your post, Randy. Looks like he was just making a comment on the city you mentioned on your trip.

Ok, here is a real sarcastic remark. I'm getting somewhere between 0 and 999 mpg. When I have nightmares I am getting 0 after filling up and caclulating it. When I having a great dream, I am getting 999mpg climbing Pike's Peak with me hauling a 12,000 pound trailer behind...

Having owned several fuel pigs over the years, I am anxious to see what mpg I get after the break-in period!
