i have a 96 ranger 4cyl 5 speed that has been great for the last 10 years until wednesday morning. it started up fine when i left the house i stopped at the store got back in and it would not start. waited about 20 min and i put the gas pedal to the floor and just kept turning it over and it finially started so i drove it work and it ran fine. got to work shut it off and tried to start it and it would turn over but would not crank.go out at lunch time to try it and it started right up.went to auto parts store for someone else and got back and it would not start.waited and did the samething and it started. any help would be appreciated
When it acts out, cycle the key from off to run 3-4 times, but don't crank the engine. Listen each time for the fuel pump to run for a couple of seconds & shut off, before cycling the switch back to off & run. Then crank the engine & see if it'll start.
If so, as g_k50 has said, suspect a fuel delivery problem. Maybe a weak pump, maybe a clogged fuel filter, seeing as how it seems to do it after a drive, maybe an acting out gas cap not venting the tank, or the vapor recovery system is acting out.
So if cycling the key doesn't bring joy, hop out & loosen the gas cap to equalize tank pressure & try cranking it. If it immediately starts, suspect the gas cap.
