The DEF is not new technology. It has been used in Europe for years. While no one I know can see the future, it is a good bet that the DEF emissions technology will be here for a while. Do a little search here and you will find a lot of useful DEF commentary.

I agree with Rickatic.

DEF is a way to get rid of nitrogen oxides without making sacrifices in the engine programming or EGR system. This allows the engine to run lean and efficient while still meeting emissions limits.

The nice thing is how cheap it is! Found a 2.5 gallon jug of the stuff for $10.99 at a store in town. Each gallon seems to be good for around 1,000 miles.

It will be around for awhile as truck stops are putting in pumps.

The DEF is such a non-issue, don't let it affect your decision making.
It's cheap, it's easy and it's a part of properly maintaining your truck (now) just like fuel, oil, coolant, etc..

Although I know we're not done hearing stories about how a friend knows a guy whos brother's friend was stranded on the road because he ran out of DEF after acknowledging several warning messages and reading the manual on how to maintain the system ahead of time.

I thought it was his second cousins....

You are so right. All the ridiculous nonsense that some bozo's attempted to spread has been thoroughly smashed before it got out of the gate. But we must remain vigilant as we are surrounded by OB assassins...am I paranoid????

Just for kicks, I ran my DEF tank down to where I had only 33 miles to empty.

The message center yelled at me almost constantly. Every 2 minutes a warning chime would sound and it would display "DEF Tank Empty in 39 miles. Speed will be limited to 55 mph" Or something very similar. I just wanted to see what would happen but I filled her up with 5 gallons (just barely got the last of it in the tank, the fill neck is a little slow when you try to top it off to squeeze in the last bit)

Those of us with the LED message center screen could never run it out by accident. I don't know what the other message center screens are like.

On another note, the diesel mechanic at my local Ford dealer called me this afternoon. He was working on a 6.7 that was having issues with the DEF tank sending unit. The owner put in a 2.5 gallon jug of Motorcraft DEF fluid at the "482 Miles remaining" level which translates to an estimated value of 3 gallons in the tank. The warning messages remain in the display and are continuing to count down, the sending unit for the DEF tank must not be allowing the PCM to recognize that there has been fluid added.

My technician friend asked me if the DEF warnings went away automatically or if I had to reset them in the menu. I told him it's the same as the low fuel warning, goes away on it's own.

He also knows that there is good info available here on FTE so he wondered if there were any other issues being reported here. I told him I had not seen any.

I told him that the thing I would do is unplug the thing and then plug it back in to see if it would "reboot" itself so to speak. Otherwise, it's just a sticky sending unit, however it works.

Here's a couple of pages out of the 6.7L manual. Notice the level sensor assembly. You can clearly see where the half full, under half range, and 800 miles left positions in the sensor are. Cool

Scroll to the bottom of the DTS site (link below) and download the 2011 6.7L book. It's a 20 MB PDF file.
This way, you'll have it if you ever need it.
