Bearings and such are the same between the S5-42 and -47, the difference is in the tooth count and outer diameter of the gears.
Really? I thought the main drive gear bearing or the counter shaft bearing was larger/stronger on the 47 vs. the 42??? If not, I do apologize for the earlier mistake...
Anyhow, when you do drop your tranny I would strongly suggest disassembly of the clutch for inspection (if you don't know how to inspect it... get a Haynes manual for the truck...). I had the flywheel resurfaced and added a new friction disk for a cost of about $40-$50 when i did mine... Way worth the effort for not having to work on that clutch for a long time!
As for finding a ZF... well I got lucky and paid $200 for Zeus (see below) that has a ZF already... And the ZF I have in Thumper I found on craigslist: los angeles classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events ($75-$85 from what i can remember) or you can use crazedlist.org : search craigslist like a madman if you have the firefox web browser (crazed lets you search all of the craigslist areas at once, ie: you can search state wide with one click). I would highly recommend crazed list b/c it saves time! I would search for F250-F350 trucks... 87/88-97... maybe find a crashed one or a truck with a blown motor for sale for a couple hundred bucks... Remember you can scrap the rest of the truck when you are done for $200 (+/-)... Plus you can keep an extra transfer case around for a spare...

Yeah, the only way I knew that was that the rebuild kit I bought for my -42 had oil seals for a -47 included in the kit, but only one set of bearings (the same kit number is also listed for the -42 and -47 in the OE ZF parts list). Any part number on the -47 beginning with 1307 is a part from the -42 and all the 1317 numbers are specific to the -47. Don't get me wrong, the -47 is still stronger than the -42, just not by way of different bearings.
Don't sweat the mistake, I've posted incorrect information before too - that's why there's all of us instead of just one person answering all the questions...
Great well i was just fed wrong information from somewhere else...
Anyway, l was just curious so I looked and asked around... I found 2 people with F250's that are parting them out with a zf 5 spd 4x4 tranny's in them... Both within 150 miles of me... Thinking about going to get a couple tannys. Seriously! I looked for 3-4 months before I found Thumpers tranny ($300 refurbed and installed)... Who knows what kind of condition Zues's tranny is in... Always good to have an extra when you get it for the right price... Right???
