Sounds good Travis, have you ever heard of 'leaching of copper oxide from the oil cooler'? The other report says 'high copper without a contributing reason, may be from copper core leaching (CCL) of the oil cooler. The third more expensive test said the physical presence of copper was minimal and that the first two regular tests was just a chemical presence of copper. The third test is good but its funny to me that both the regular tests pointed to the oil cooler??
you could always get a center section and swap them out, but I've never heard of copper leaching before. I guess it can happen though. There are only a couple things in there that is copper that the oil touches.
Ya, the FS2500 people said that running that Schaeffer 7000 oil 10,700 miles was nothing compared to a lot of their other customers. Then again, on the other side of the coin a lot of people say with the heavy towing, even though its all highway miles, that I'm crazy to do it. I'm one of these retired snow birds, winter in AZ and then six months on the road. When I'm away from home for six months I don't want to do a oil change. Maybe I should do a oil change and not push my luck.
I have never heard of leaching copper either but doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Glenn you might go over to "bob is the oil guy" forum. Lots of good knowledgeable bypass filtration and long oil change interval people over there. They might be some help. There is a diesel specific section for oil change reports.
What does cold weather have to do with the oil cooler leaking? I'm having trouble making a connection between the two. And............is the leak coolant or oil?
I'm not real sure why the oil coolers let loose when the cold snaps come, but apparently they do. When mine blew it launched oil all over the driveway. Probably lost about a gallon before I came out an noticed it was blowing oil everywhere.
Glenn, I wasn't in reference to the "Copper Leaching" I was under the impression from other comments that were posted that the oil cooler starts leaking during cold snaps. I don't understand how cold weather effects the cooler and why that should cause it to leak. I also am assuming that the leak is from coolant. Right?
Brown Falcon, Post #8 mentioned this same thing.

I believe the cooler leak can start with a cold snap because of the shrinkage in the o-rings. The o-rings get so hard that they can't fill the void any more then once they get a little heat in them they seal back up.

Rog, Its not leaking, the oil report said that copper is leaching, maybe from the oil cooler. I had a thread with copies of the oil analysis reports.
Thanks Tim, that seems logical. Hmmmmm, so a rebuild or re-manufactured oil cooler really is a "bath" and new 'O-Rings" as long as the body and ends are sound. Sounds like a money saver and a "Do it Your Self" project.

Yep! Only servicable part of the cooler are the 4 large o-rings and the gaskets. Unless the center section is rusted though or the aluminum end caps are pitted its a reseal and reinstall. Too much work to buy a "reman" (cleaned) oil cooler to install. I would however buy one of those to reseal and install to save time or as a spare in case the center section or ends were possibly bad on mine.
