You can't do anything worth doing engine swap wise for that money. A decent running 351w is going to be north of your figure, leaving you nothing to do the swap with.
If you buy some cheapo million mile scrappy special, you'll end up with a nice new to you junk motor.
Does you six run right? Tune up, carb or efi running correctly?
You can put a long tube header on it for that money, that will give a few ponies. An intake and 4bbl carb would just about max you budget--unless you are efi, then forget the intake and 4bbl.
lol yeah my six runs like a champ it only has 75k on it. i have another 300 i bought for it but its currently being rebuilt in my shed by me lol. i am having problems finding pistons and a cam for it though... im thinkink im gonna bore it like .090 over. i am currently going to school at a vo-tech and im in machine shop so i was going to bore it at a friends shop.
A couple things on your setup.
0.090 over on a 300 is way overkill. In fact, the less you can bore it, the better. 300s don't gain much, if anything, by boring them over, so go with as little as you can.
Summitracing has pistons and piston rods for the 300, and Comp Cams has a good cam selection for them.
The 85 300 has a computer controlled feedback setup in it, which isn't the greatest for performance. A good boost in performance and reliability would be converting it back to a DuraSpark II ignition.
Lastly, EFI 4.9s only have a small amount more power than a carb'd one. 150 vs 120 hp. However, the EFI setup is very finicky and doesn't like to be messed with, so there's not a lot of stuff you can do to them. Carb'd 300s, however, love addons and performance parts and can easily get over 200hp for not a "lot" of money.
4bbl carb, 4bbl aftermarket intake, head port and polish, ignition upgrade, and an upgraded exhaust (try using the exhaust manifolds from an EFI truck), and you'll be around 200hp/320tq.
Just a thought here, but a while back we had a 69 ford 5 ton dump with a 300 in it. The "industrial" 300s had a different high flow exhaust manifold, and I think maybe a different carb. I don't know just how much power you would gain if you found one of those in an old junk work truck, but I do know that ford used these since the engines would constantly be working in the higher RPM ranges. I'm kicking myself cause I had one in my basement for years that I finally got rid of. I'd like to be able to look at it now. Apparently they are somewhat rare too. Might be able to find one at a truck graveyard, look for late 60s, and 70s flatbeds and dumps. I think even some wood chippers had them.

You can get them new off of Ebay fortunately. They're pretty cool. As far as I know, the carb is still the same but these allowed them to flow out the exhaust significantly more at the cost of a heat riser (since cold start warmups weren't as great of a concern).
If only I had kept half of the things I've junked over the years. Stuff sits around a while and I eventually end up saying "i'm never gonna use that" and it ends up in the scrap yard. I'd love to have all the 302s I junked over the years, at least then I'd have all the parts I need for the one I'm getting running now.n
