Hi, i have a ford 300 straight 6 that i just tore down for a rebuild and realized something. its only a straight 6. i want a v-8. i was wondering what i could sell a bare straight 6 block for and was wondering what motor i should get i was thinking either a 351 windsor or a 460. Any advice? thanks for the help
Welcome to FTE, rentakid! Lots of good people here.
For your truck, I believe the 300 I6 uses the same bell housing pattern as the 302, 351W
& 351C so you might be able to keep your same transmission if you used those two
engines. A 460 would require a different bell housing/transmission as well as a remote
oil filter mounting kit.
If installing a V8, you will also need new clutch linkages (if applicable) and engine stands.
I would tell you that if you are going to mess around with an engine swap, find a used zf trans and a 460 carb. I personally feel that the 460 has more power and similar mpgs to a smaller v8. With the ZF trans you garner as OD gear which keeps the RPMS down on the free way.
thanks, glovemeister, right now im currently looking for a junk truck with a good frame and 4X4 so i can just throw my body on it and motor and everything. but i dont know if i want to go with a 460 as it may be too much motor. as tho i sound stupid i am a lead foot lol
Realistically, if you drive a small block v8 your truck is still pushing the same amount. Believe me I thought the same when I bought my pickup. I bought a 95 Dodge Ram Ram v6 5spd 4x2 for $2700 dollars with 56k miles. The day I turned 16. Been a great little pickup but I figured being non 4x4 and v6 with the 5spd od, I anticipated that I would have gotten 17-20 mpgs. No so I get more like 13. I would really reccomend a 460 as most times they get between 10-12 have a lot of power, and in general they are a bulletproof motor.
Also I had an 86 IROC after my Dodge paid 700 bucks cash for it and it was a good car. It was plenty fast. I took it up to much faster than i would have ever went but the cruise control throttle linkage stuck when i hit the cruise before I knew not to do it. Was up to about 130 or more speedo wasn't accurate really.
what tranny should i hook up to a 460 if i bought one? cause i dont think i could use the one off of my straight 6 because it wouldnt be able to take the power
Nothing wrong at all with the 300. It's a great engine. Depends what you want out of the truck. Don't get me wrong, the 300 is like a train, it will pull good and do it happily. But it won't be anything to a 460. Rompin' stompin' get up and go power. But if this is your daily driver, you would save a lot on gas with the 300. People claim over 20 and 22mpg on this site at times.
thanks, freakshow. and at my calculations for my gas mileage say im only getting like 14 mpg in town i have not drove it on the highway yet. since i got it in may and i dont have my license yet. iv been driving it around town and about 30 miles to a friends house.
If you want fuel mileage, don't bore the cylinders unless you have to.
The more the cylinders are bored, the more fuel and air it takes to make up the space.
If you want fuel mileage, stay with the 300-6. A stock engine of this year range, with stock bore, and all the components working correctly, will give you around 16-18 MPG average with a F-250. Converting it to a 4x4 will lower it about 2 MPG.
The F-250 is heavier than a F-150. If the truck was a F-150 it would give you 18-20MPG easy.
Remember each engine is different and you may get more or less mpg.
I personally would not choose a v6 over a v8 if I had to choice again. Presently, my newer v6 only gets 13 empty/non tow, and like 10 if I have it loaded down. I personally believe the large mpgs from v6 business but they are still pushing the same truck so its largely nill. I personally am biased because I do like the 460 but thats what I would get.
That's comletelly useless, especially when the 300 Straight 6 is a far better engine than the other small V8's as far as dependability and durability goes!
I know its understandable to make the switch to a v6 thinking it will net better fuel economy, but I have seen it first hand that it doesn't always work out that way. Just because one person happened to get 17-18 or a group of people doesn't mean that another person will. I guess it could just be my bad luck in getting a Dodge motor that gets 13 mpgs, when others are getting 17-22 with the same motor but it hasn't given me any problems and the maintenance on it has been kept up. When I bought my Dodge, I wish I would have done it right the first time but a v8 or v10 and 4x4 super cab/extended cab. But I guess my ford fills that need.
