Pre Shutdown Idle

According to the 6.7 Powerstroke owners manual the engine should be idled for 3 min. prior to shutdown. Many times this is not possible for me to do. I wonder how many owners do the 3 min. idle and how many like me do not normally wait the time.

I don't unless I am towing.

Here is what the manual says.. Don't think it that improtant unless you are towing or on a hot day...

STOPPING THE ENGINE
Turn the ignition to the off position.
To prolong engine life (especially after extended high speed, high
ambient temperature, or high GVW/GCW operation), it is recommended
that a hot engine be idled for 3-5 minutes which will allow the
turbocharged engine to cool down.

Same here.

Without guages I only waited to shut it down after flogging on it or after pulling. Usually by coasting through my neighborhood..thats plenty of time for her to cool down under normal driving.

Is this a manual shutdown (wait time) or can the computer be set to turn it off
I normally have a turbo timer installed on my cars which controlls this automatically
As I am still waiting for my first F350 to arrive I am still on a learning curve

Manual.....sit there and wait.
However there have been turbo timers for these trucks in the past...not sure if there is one out yet for these newer models

I try to sit for at least a minute or I like to see my oil temps at 195 before cutting off.

Had a shutdown timer in my GMC, worked great and used it almost every time if I had used the throttle more then a very light touch right before stopping.

If I didn't set the timer I would usually wait until the pyro dropped to 300.

As more and more turbos have water jacketed center bearings this become less of an issue. But - it certainly cannot hurt the turbo by assuring that the center bearing has cooled down sufficiently.

Don't know what the Ford turbo spins at, but typical speeds under a load can be anywhere form 100,000 - 200,000 RPMS's

On our trucks at work some guys just pull into the bay and shut them down, you can hear the turbo whine for 1-20 seconds sometimes.

That is a turbo spinning and not having an circulating oil bath around the bearing.

You could alway shut it off get out and autostart it and walk away. Letting it time it self out and shut off.
