I fixed that surge problem

so is this just a problem with the 300 inline 6??? or would it help with a 302 or 351??

Even though the 302 is supposed to run right at optimal mixture WITH the EGR valve, it would make sense to me that if you're running lean when under load (normally when egr becomes active), then it would help to richen up the mix if you restricted the EGR flow. Am I being logical with this?

Based on mnay posts about this - primarily because new FTE visitors who are 4.9 owners don't post their pertinent information (with every post - put it in your signature) - what I've read is that many V-8 owners find that the carbon that eventually builds up and blocks the EGR flow makes them run worse. There are many reports of cleaning out the EGR passages (on V-8s) and finding the engine runs better.

Why? Heck, I don't know. But the V-8's aren't running as lean as the I-6's (19 lb. vs. 14 lb. injectors) (plus the I-6's were reportedly fitted with a EGR valve from 400 cubic-inch engines - but use only one of the two passages - which is, apparently, still way too much exhaust gas).

This has obviously been hashed out to some degree - I recommend using the Search function of this site.

Best,

Hey GammaDriver,
I've been trying to do a search on how to clean the EGR passages but I can't get anything.
The posts that you provided tell you that you should clean your EGR passages but I'm looking for something on how to clean them?
Do you have any info on that? Can you provide any posts?

Thanks in advance if you can!

I would use a small cylindrical wire brush and some good carb cleaner.

IES, ya can't go wrong with pfogle's simple advice there. It's the same as I've read others use.

There are plenty of good carb cleaners out there. I know I like BG's Air Intake Cleaner, and I imagine it would handle the carbon just like a carb cleaner spray would.

Heck, I reckon one could take a dremel tool to a really clogged passage if one wanted to.

Go buy an EGR gasket from your local FOrd dealer before attempting to clean it so you have something to put it back together with.

Best,
