My truck kept surging at about 1700 rpm when you were cruising and not under load, I went to ford, and they told me the computer was calibrated wrong from the factory, they call it the MPG miles per gallon mode, and it opened the egr valve too much at this rpm range, and that I would need a up dated computer, not spending those kinda bucks, the calibration numbers are on the door jam drivers side there was about 30 differant sets of numbers, I have the numbers but too many to type, if you have this problem and want me to check your calibration numbers just post them here I'll tell you if your truck is on this list, Now for the cure, nitro94 suggested I make a metal plate to put between the egr and the intake manifold, and drill a 1/8 " hole in it, so your restricting the original hole of 3/4" down to 1/8", because the 3/4 hole is letting to much exhaust gas back into the intake and leaning out the fuel to much, and causing this surge problem, I did this today and wala she runs so smooth now it's like a differant truck,if you plug the egr right off you will get a check engine light, you won't with the 1/8" hole thanks nitro94
leeiwonfan3 does your truck surge too?
Your calibration code is listed in the same TSB as omni's was in so you might want to try the EGR restrictor plate too.
The TSB talks about replacing the EGR valve and the PCM but if just restricting the EGR does the trick there's no sense spending big money on it
New computer (not a reman, but then again, not Ford either) runs about $100 (+$90 core, so take your old one with ya) from AutoZone, saw it online somewhere for about $75 while I was looking last week.
I don't know a thng about you or your truck, omni, but I am willling to bet you have an inline six engine.
I realize you are newer here, but it is really important that you not throw information out without being specific. Throwing your advice (or even just your experiences) into the 1987-1996 trucks forum, without specifying your engine, means that you are advertising it is a fix for everyone.
Now shame on me for posting if you actually have a V-8, (or, actually, not since you don't give any pertinent info - and that's important) but this info is actually not what the Ford V-8 owners need to do to keep their trucks running right based on all of the reports that have come in through FTE.
We end up hashing this out here too often due to posters not being specific about what they have in their trucks.
Glad it worked for you. I installed the plate over a year ago and am happy with it, but I am going to try a plate with no hole in it next time.
if I'm wrong here.
Best,

I think gammadriver was refering to omni, the original poster.
I too have eliminated check-engine-light problems by blocking off the egr, and have never had a re-occurrence after that. But I have not noticed any differnence in performance or fuel economy because of it. This applies to the 92 F150 5.0 I had previously, as well as my present 88 F!50 5.0 EFI, and, after some slight modification to the plunger, my 92 Mustang GT.
