I ran a search prior to posting this question, but I didn't locate and recent articles. So forgive me if this has been asked many times.
I have a 2005 King Ranch F-150 with the standard 6 disc changer and am/fm radio. My friend has a 2008 K/R F-150 with the navigation system/6 disc changer/satelite radio. Looking from the outside it looks like the face plate is about the same size as the radio in my 2005.
My questions are can I upgrade my 2005 with the same or similar navigation/cd/satelite radio system as my friends 2008??
I can locate a few used OEM units, but I have no idea if they will be compatible with my 2005. Plus I can't locate one with satelite radio, is this an extra I must purchase once I get the radio?
I can only comment as to the fit. YES the faceplate opening is the same for 2005 and 2008.
But here's my question to you. Why not look into an aftermarket unit that has everything you want, and maybe more? The OEM unit is nice, but the aftermarket offerings will give you better sound, etc.
I suppose an aftermarket unit would be fine so long as it will work with my steering wheel controls. The navigation unit would be great, but what I'm really after is the touch screen satelite radio and the 6 cd disk changer.
If you have any aftermarkey suggestions that would fit this truck I would like to hear them...
I'm a HUGE Pioneer fan. Check out their selections from $600 and on up from there.
These have everything but your changer - they are just single disc Pioneer USA - GPS Navigation

I had a Kenwood touchscreen navigation stereo installed in my 07, I have the factory premium sound system which really sounds amazing with this deck installed. I had a shop install it and they were able to wire the steering wheel controls as well.

ANY of the aftermarket systems will do what you want them to. The steering wheel controls are handled with a PAC module. That is an extra charge. Sat radio is also an extra module, as well as Navigation and backup camera systems.
I have to ask.... why are you stuck on the 6 disk? My Pioneer AVH-P3200DVD has USB input, AUX input, and an SD card slot. I can plug in my Ipod and have days of music and not have to deal with CD's. I also have an 8gig HC card with 7 days worth of music. It is all filed by artist, or album. Pop it in, select what I want to listen to and go. You can put all your CD's on an SD card or flash drive and keep all your CD's at home!
Amazon or sonic electronix have the best prices.... Crutchfield has the same stuff at a slightly higher price. The only difference with Crutchfield... they give you all the documentation to install your system with pictures, They also give you all the harnesses needed, as well as the installation kit. Their customer service and tech support are also top notch! Once completed, it will look like a factory install, and it will sound 10X better than ANY factory system. Plus you'll be able to store ALL your CD's at the house and use digital media instead.
x2 on the helpfulness of Crutchfield. Their little "extras" are usually worth at least, if not more, than what their slightly higher prices are. They are great!
I have a 2008 oem nav unit on my 05 and it works great. However I did have to trim behind the dash a little, the plastic where the mounts are mounted on. If not, the factory nav unt was sticking out of the dash maybe about a 1/4 inch. Not to say you will need to do this but just incase.
If sound quality is at all a consideration/need for you, then you should definitely look into the aftermarket.
I recently (2 days after my purchase of the FX4) ditched the stock HU for a pretty basic iPod ready Pioneer. The sound quality with the new HU makes the OEM HU seem like crap.
