There is more than one version of the 2.3 . The older version is the 8 valve 8 plug one and the newer version is the Duratec 2.3 16valve. The 16 valve is in your friend's truck. I believe that the 16valve started around 2001 to present.

Looks like 01 to 06. But if Ford is still selling them, I'm sure they are still out there. Core is 1000.

Your friend needs to find a qualified mechanic. His information is incorrect if he repeated it to you properly. Used engines are available from many sources, and re-built or re-manufactured engines are sold by many parts stores.

+ 3...........the 2.3 duratec is a good engine...........I believe the "foundation" of the engine was used in a few cars (ranger, focus, etc)............I am not sure if you can take one from a focus and use it or not but it might be worth investigating..........The truck sounds like it is well worth figuring out how to get a engine back in it...........recommend to your friend that if he does do an engine swap to make sure he puts in a new clutch, pressure plate and slave cylinder...........keep an eye on craigslist. if you ever could use one from a focus those things are always getting totaled by insurance company's?

I just looked on CL and found this 2004 Ford Ranger standard cab I tried to call but no answer.........It did not say the mileage but if it was not to high and you find out why there is no title...it would proably work.........you could sell the rest of the parts of the truck and get money back....I will copy and paste the add below in case it gets deleted.....it was in the Boston CL

2004 ford ranger white standard cab automatic 4 cylinder. for parts only, no title. Truck runs and looks good. aluminum cap with ladder racks also available. no body damage, never in an accident. mostly all highway miles. $1500 or best offer. call me at 617-799-8689 if intersted.
